About the Book

This volume contains most of the papers presented at the 24th International Conference on Boundary Element Methods held in Sintra, Portugal. The BEM Conference series has always reflected the most recent advances in the technique and this volume continues that tradition by concentrating on developments, such as dual reciprocity, some advanced formulations and meshless methods, which are currently attracting the attention of the scientific community. Other papers cover a wide range of applications, mostly dealing with the solutions of complex problems. A valuable aid to understanding the BEM and a source of ideas and applications, the book contains almost 70 papers dealing with the following themes: BEM in Portugal; meshless methods; plates and shells; advanced formulations; dual reciprocity method; acoustics; electrostatics and electromagnetics; transport and fluid problems; wave propagation problems; stress analysis; composite materials; inverse problems; and computational techniques.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 BEM in Portugal: The BEM at the Constructions Lab in the University of Coimbra; On the verification of a potential based low order boundary element method for incompressible flows; Numerical modelling of OWC wave-power plants of the oscillating water column type; Scattering by cracks: Numerical simulations using a boundary finite element method; Thermo-mechanical analysis of metal forming processes through a combined finite element boundary element approach. Section 2 Meshless methods: Boundary meshfree methods based on the boundary point interpolation methods; The method of fundamental solutions for solving Poisson problems; Solution of Poisson equation by Trefftz method; On methods for solving the Dirichlet problem for Poisson's equation; Accurately solving the Poisson equation by combining multiscale radial basis functions and Gaussian quadrature; A meshless boundary element technique based on multi-level iterated Helmholtz-type interpolation; Polynomial particular solutions for Poisson problems; Some recent advances on the RBF; A meshless computational method for solving inverse heat conduction problems; Mesh-free method for groundwater modelling; Sound transmission through inhomogeneous waveguides; The use of radial basis functions for one-dimensional structural analysis problems. Section 3 Plates and shells: Hierarchical plate modelling by boundary elements; Stability analysis of laminate plates by the boundary element method; Boundary element stress analysis of plates on 2 parameter foundation under generalized loading; Ponding on floating membranes; Integral equation method for cylindrical shell under axisymmetric loads; A strategy to perform the Reissner-Mindlin's theory. Section 4 Advanced formulations: BIE and Trefftz approximation; The hybrid boundary element method applied to functionally graded materials; A non-singular hybrid boundary element formulation incorporating a higher order fundamental solution; The BEM formulation of the distinct element method; A study on the source point locations in the method of fundamental solution; Two multipole alternatives based on Taylor series expansions for 3D BEM elasticity formulation; Implementation of the slip-weakening model in a Displacement Discontinuity Method based numerical technique; Boundary element analysis of hyper-elastic elastomeric materials. Section 5 Dual reciprocity method: A boundary element method using DRM for nonlinear heat conduction problems; The Laplace transform dual reciprocity boundary element method for nonlinear transient field problems; The dual reciprocity method for solving biharmonic problems; Dual reciprocity formulation for elasticity problems using compact supported radial basis functions; An improved DRM representation of partial derivatives.
