About the Book

As modern society evolves, new types of hazards are introduced and consequently new research is needed to quantify these risks and prepare adequate mitigation strategies. Covering a series of important topics of current research interest and with practical applications, this book examines all aspects of risk analysis and hazard mitigation, ranging from specific assessment of risk to mitigation associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards. This volume of the Transactions of the Wessex Institute contains papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Risk Analysis. The conference offered the opportunity for the professionals involved in risk analysis to inform themselves on the progress made by their colleagues in this field, to be involved in discussions on key issues and challenges in risk analysis and to exchange views on various aspects. The papers in this volume are divided into a series of sections dealing with: Estimation of risk; Hazard prevention, management and control; Methods and systems of safe ship operation (special session); Flood risk; Soil, water and air contamination; Security risk; Risk management and Network systems.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Estimation of risk Risk analysis between possible and probable; Natural hazard risk depending on the variability of damage potential; 'On-zone' and 'off-zone' geomorphic features for multirisk assessment related to slope dynamics in the Icelandic fjords; Risk analysis in the chemical industry: an urea-formaldehyde resins case; A stochastic approach to rainfall forecasting in the space-time domain: the PRAISEST model; Risk analysis and optimization of road tunnels; Risk indexes for studying interconnected earthing systems inside MV networks Section 2: Hazard prevention, management and control Geotechnical risk management as a basis for quality assurance; Redistribution of transport of hazardous materials and external safety risks: the case of rail transport in The Netherlands; Risk assessment on railway transportation of hazardous materials; Sinkholes risk analysis: case history of Marsala (Sicily, Italy); Introduction of an approach to disaster mitigation using crisis-adaptive information sharing platform and technology Section 3: Risk management How to build a company risk profile: a methodology based upon the risks disclosed by Fortune 500 companies; A model for risk identification in ERP system processes; Urban infrastructures and physical hazards: a challenge for planning; Enhancing safety in the event of catastrophic failure: the case for continual use systems; Reliability evaluation of metal oxide varistors for maintenance scheduling Section 4: Soil, water and air contamination Application of the ISCST3 model to an industrial area: comparison between predicted and observed concentrations; Probabilistic assessment of leachate propagation in the groundwater by an uncontrolled landfill; Risk and impact assessment through air, water and soil quality modelling: an integrated approach Section 5: Flood risk Risk based decision making in Kaunas hydropower system during flood period; Living with dam-break flood risk: the case of a Portuguese dam-valley system; Storm surge induced by extratropical cyclone Gudrun: hydrodynamic reconstruction of the event, assessment of mitigation actions and analysis of future flood risks in Parnu, Estonia; A vulnerability analysis approach for the Portuguese West Coast; Application of high-resolution (10 m) DEM on Flood Disaster in 3D-GIS; Cost-benefit analysis to select the optimal flood protection strategy along the Scheldt; Application of the NAM model to the Ali-Efenti basin Section 6: Methods and systems of safe ship operation (Special session organised by J. Lisowski) The dynamic game theory methods applied to ship control with minimum risk of collision; Application of 3D computer simulation for marine engineers as a hazard prevention tool; Diagnosis as a fundamental element for the safe exploitation of marine power plants Section 7: Security risk Rationale and development of a Security Assurance Index with application toward the development of a World Risk Index; Impact of coalition and insurgent force levels on civilian deaths and injuries in Iraq, 2003-2005; Application of a systematic methodology to terrorism risk management Section 8: Network systems Evaluation of hazard distribution in network structures; Evaluation of reliable path in risk areas
