About the Book

Public appreciation of the benefits and values of our architectural heritage has advanced considerably over the past decades. The part played by old buildings in the historical identity of a region, town or nation is increasingly recognised and appreciated, and their effective preservation requires looking beyond borders and continents to benefit from the experience gained by others. The International Conferences on Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Historical Buildings (STREMAH) provide an ideal forum for architects, curators, engineers, art historians, surveyors and archaeologists from around the world to exchange opinions and experiences, present the most up-to-date scientific and practical findings, and discuss problems and solutions. This volume features a large number of contributions from the sixth meeting in the series, held in June 1999. Containing state-of-the-art research and recent case studies, the book is divided into the following sections: Experimental Techniques; Monitoring and Testing; Mathematical Simulation and Computer Modelling; Deterioration, Protection and Evaluation of Materials; Seismic Behaviour and Repairs; Case Studies; Historical, Social and Architectural Aspects; Long Term Effects due to Environmental Causes; Techniques and Repairs; Maintenance and Restoration of Historical Buildings; Prevention of Structural Damage; Stabilisation, Underpinning and Reinforcement; The Revival of Dresden.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 - Experimental Techniques: Bramante's design for the dome of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. A study using experimental stress analysis techniques; Application of georadar to the diagnosis of damaged structures; Experimental assessment of load-bearing capacity on structures subject to monument protection; Stress screening on repaired mortar surfaces using nondestructive testing methods; Timber-masonry composite structures - a bearing structure model; Experimental results on masonry wall anchored ties. Section 2 - Monitoring and Testing: Measurement and estimation of vibration of old buildings; Tensometric measurements for static securing of historical buildings; Assessment of the safety and remaining fatigue life of historical steel bridges; Field pull-out tests of supplementary injection anchors in historic masonry; Assessment of the loadbearing capacity of historic masonry; The actual situation of photogrammetry and surveying of monuments. Section 3 - Mathematical Simulation and Computer Modelling: Stone arch bridges under in-plane loading: discrete element modelling and incremental analysis up to failure; Pomposa Abbey: FEM simulation of some structural damages and restoration proposals; Collapse analysis of double ogival domes: the case of Basilica of S. Maria of Carignano in Genoa; Influence of environmental conditions upon behaviour of historical buildings; Modelling of real historic timber joints; Computer modelling of an active space steel structure reinforcement: a case study. Section 4 - Deterioration, Protection and Evaluation of Materials: Environmental deterioration of stone buildings in Ortigia island; (Sicily, Italy); Environmental deterioration of ancient and modern hydraulic mortars; Influence of thick mortar joints on the early and late mechanical behaviour of Byzantine constructions; Alkyl (dimethyl)ethoxysilanes - valuable agents for the hydrophobization of natural stones; Preliminary observations on the building materials at the prehistoric settlement of Toumba Thessaloniki. Section 5 - Seismic Behaviour and Repairs: Restoration and seismic strengthening of Colorado Street Bridge; St. Monica's Church earthquake damage repair; Conservation of monuments in natural stone in earthquake zones: reversibility as an intervention strategy; The dynamics of the bell tower of St. Stephen's Church, Willington, Co. Durham; The dynamic performance of models of ancient columns and colonnades with and without the insertion of wires made of shape memory alloy; Greek temple and timber Pagoda in Japan - comparison of the aseismic structural performances. Section 6 - Case Studies: The bridges built by the English during the early part of the last century in the Ionian Island of Kythera; The typology of three-centre masonry vaults in the Venetian tradition. A method of analysis; Investigation on materials and structures for the reconstruction of the partially collapsed Cathedral of Noto (Sicily); Assessment of the Magarola arch bridge. A case study; Some developments on the lateral strength of historical reinforced vaulted buildings; Conservation of the Cathedral of Acerenza by means of a multidisciplinary approach; Structural studies for the restoration of the domes of Brussels Court of Justice. Section 7 - Historical, Social and Architectural Aspects: Stones upon the void; The Berlin "Neues Museum" - a microcosm of Prussian building technology against the background of beginning industrialization; A peculiar type of structure; granaries from Iberia and Anatolia; Renovation of the Praetorian Palace in Koper - conservation problems; Vaulted brick masonry constructions in Venice in the eighteenth century in the architectural and constructive context of the time; The Golden Mean and the Dome of San Jose Cathedral: a structural interpretation; Medieval survivals in modern Rome; Excavation, restoration and conservation of archaeological sites - Villa dei Quintili on the Appia Antica in Rome; Collaboration between private and public agencies for the purpose of retrofitting structures: possibilities and problems provided through human systems engineering. Section 8 - Long Term Effects due to Environmental Causes: Risk analysis for the protection of cultural heritage from industrial pollution; Time evolution of stability of leaning towers; Effects of a counterweight on tilt evolution of leaning towers; Structural decay caused by microclimate and weathering attack. Section 9 - Techniques and Repairs: The use of aramid fibres in the restoration of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi; Methodology applied to the removal of the ruins and to the survey of the remains after the collapse of the Noto Cathedral in Sicily; The Neues Museum of Berlin - restoration during the stage of structural stabilization as a first step towards reconstruction; The use of steel in the conservation of timber structures ("Sustainable technologies in historical essay teachings"); Strength evaluation of fire retarded wood truss members; Behaviour of stud connectors in wood-concrete composite beams; The stabilization of the gothic roof bearing structure of the Frauenkirche in Mei?en with CFRP-tension; From Byzantine to Ottoman period: technical aspects in construction; The sail-vault: a survey of constructive techniques to stabilize a sophisticated structure.
