About the Book

This book includes updated versions of papers originally presented at the Fourth International Conference on Computer Methods and Water Resources (CMWR IV), held in Byblos, Lebanon in 1997. Water resources are the highest priority on the agenda of many countries, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, and issues of water quality, quantity, management, and planning, as well as other related subjects, are crucial to the international community. The importance of meetings such as the CMWR series cannot therefore be over-emphasized. The peer reviewed papers featured come from internationally acknowledged scientists and engineers and cover a wide range of water resources topics and computational techniques. They are divided into the following sections: Water Resources Planning and Pollution; Groundwater Flow; River, Estuary and Coastal Engineering; Numerical Methods and Genetic Algorithms; Open Channel and Pipe Flow; Porous Media Flow; Pumps and Water Structures; Salt Water Intrusion; Water Quality.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 - Water Resources Planning and Pollution: Confident reservoir operation; Computational comparison among some LP codes for large scale water resource optimization problems; Extraction and analysis of the structure of a drainage network from Digital Elevation Models; Global information system on water resources and uses for hydro agricultural development in Lebanon. Section 2 - Groundwater Flow: Perforating deep wells ... smartly!; Steady state flow of groundwater through non-homogeneous multi-zoned porous media - the use of the finite element method; Two dimensional modelling of pollutants migration in ground water. Section 3 - River, Estuary and Coastal Engineering: Water wave driven seepage flux in sea bottom sediment; Application of hybrid grid method and nested method to modeling three-dimensional flows in river and coastal waters. Section 4 - Numerical Methods and Genetic Algorithm: Finite elements simulation and visualization of seepage and groundwater flow: A boundary integral approach to one-dimensional transport in unsaturated porous media. Section 5 - Open Channel and Pipe Flow: Use of spreadsheets for water and bed profile calculations; Direct calculation of fire flows with water distribution network models; Experimental investigation of a submerged single jet discharge in reversing tidal ambient flow; Application of turbulence depth-averaged k - w model to simulating and predicting flows and contaminant transports in open channel, river and estuary; Analysis of flow patterns in an activated sludge reactor; An element by element algorithm for pipe network analysis; Cognitive problems in seepage and viscous fluid flows. Section 6 - Porous Media Flow: Decision support for flow in porous media: Optimal sampling for data assimilation; A model for the transport of microbial particles in a porous column; A finite element model of flow and deformation in three-dimensional fractured domains; A comparative analysis of transport through discrete fractures; Analyzing effect of fluid flow on surface subsidence in mining area. Section 7 - Pumps and Water Structures: Application of 3-D finite element analysis in positive displacement pumps; Processing of the characteristic curves for centrifugal and axial pumps. Section 8 - Salt Water Intrusion: Finite elements-sharp interface approach and GAs for parameter estimation. Section 9 - Water Quality: Experimental and analytical modelling of water quality in distribution systems: a comparative study; Hydrobiology of Lebanon: The impact of human activities on the benthic community of the Aaray stream (a tributary of the Awwali river); An example of GIS use in surface and groundwater pollution sensitivity analysis: Regional impact of mining activities in South Africa.
