About the Book

Water resources, upon which the well-being of future generations depends, are under extreme pressure today all over the world. Resulting problems have given rise to many issues including water quality, quantity, management and planning, and reflect the growing concern and importance accorded to their sustainable management. The Fifth International Conference on Water Resources Management presents the more recent technological and scientific developments associated with the management of surface and sub-surface water resources. The papers are grouped under the following topics: Water Management and Planning; Waste Water Treatment and Re-use; Water Quality; Pollution Control; Management and Economics; Decision Support Systems; Hydraulic Systems; Flood Risk; Hydraulic Modelling; Irrigation Problems; Governance and Monitoring.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Water management and planning Optimized exploitation of aquifers: application to the Querenca-Silves aquifer system: Impact of socio-political dynamics on water and sanitation service delivery in Malawi; Water resources management in the bottled water business; Surface water management model for the Colorado River Basin; Simple to complex tools for sustainable water resource management; Challenges regarding potable water supply management by South African municipalities; Conservation through calibration and communication; Study of the Prespa-Ohrid Lake system using tracer experiments and the lake's water balance; A hydro-economic model for managing groundwater resources in Semi-arid regions; Aquaculture and marine biodiversity boost: case examples from the Canary Islands Section 2: Waste water treatment and re-use Water quality and emission rates of greenhouse gases in a treatment reedbed; Land based disposal of wastewater: fate of phosphorus; Use of a predictive model to calculate E. coli survival in waste waters after secondary and tertiary treatments; Biodegradation of phenol in a draft-tube spouted bed bioreactor with biomass attached to hydrogel particles; Analysis of the temperature influence on the specific resistance from different fractions of the mixed liquor in a Membrane Bioreactor Section 3: Water quality Water quality assessment of Aguamilpa Reservoir, Nayarit, Mexico; Optimizing water treatment systems using artificial intelligence based tools Section 4: Pollution control Mathematical models for irrigation and nutrient management practices to improve nitrate pollution control; Concentrations of heavy metals in macroalgae in the tropical western Atlantic; Rainfall simulation study of the impact of unsealed roads in Cardinia Shire; Efficiency comparison of advanced photochemical oxidation technologies in phenol removal from aqueous solution in Iran; Characterization of lead and arsenic levels in sediment of the lower basin of the San Pedro River, Mexico and its importance regarding human health; Groundwater and contaminant travel time distributions near permeable reactive barriers Section 5: Management and economics Rehabilitation of a water distribution system with diffused water losses; Rational water use in the US: the potential for the retrofit of simple residential technologies; Investigation into potential impacts of implementation of water sensitive urban design components; A simplified equation for two-dimensional drainage; Community and socio-economic impact of corporate purchase of water: lessons from Australia; Affordability of household water and wastewater charges in Manukau City: a case study Section 6: Decision support systems A decision support system for sustainable groundwater management. Case study: Gnangara sustainability strategy - Western Australia; Willingness to pay for water and water rights definition: study among smallholder irrigators in Limpopo province, South Africa; A decision support system to assist river basin hydroelectric inventory studies in Brazil Section 7: Hydraulic systems Four explicit formulae for friction factor calculations in pipe flow; The possible effect of re-opening of the Vaike Strait (Baltic Sea): results of high-resolution modelling; The influence of longitudinal elastic systems on the celerity (speed of elastic waves); Numerical integration of the contravariant form of the two phase flow motion equations Section 8: Flood risk A new plotting position concept to evaluate peak flood discharges based on short samples; Flooding tendencies for the city of Ensenada, Baja, California, Mexico, 1948-2004; Siret River Basin Planning (Romania) and the role of Wetlands in diminishing the floods; Comparison of flow and erosion sedimentation measurement with [HEC-2] and [HEC-6] computer models for Koohsefid River Section 9: Hydrological modelling Determination of volume of water reservoir by using tritium concentrations; Identification of filtration and migration parameters in the MATLAB calculation environment using numerical simulation of breakthrough curve and optimization methods; Data acquisition system for remote measurement of expenditure in open channels Section 10: Irrigation problems Verification of crop coefficients for chickpeas in the Mediterranean environment; Management of irrigation schemes in Algeria: an assessment of water policy impact and perspectives on development; Drought response and mitigation in Mediterranean irrigation agriculture; Investigating soil-plant relationships for sustainable management of irrigation with saline water in a Sicilian vineyard; Irrigation for food production in the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil: case studies in Petrolina, Juazeiro, Vale do Acu and Agrovila Canudos in Ceara-Mirim; Extending the use of thermal furrows for irrigation purposes Section 11: Governance and monitoring A transaction cost approach to assess the Water Framework Directive implementation; Tracking political climate change: US policy and the human right to water
