About the Book

Review :
Roedd llais y canwr o Drelogan, sir y Fflint, yn gyfarwydd drwy Gymru, Lloegr ac mewn rhannau helaeth o gyfandir Ewrop a Gogledd America. Roedd yn adnabyddus am ei waith ym myd opera ac oratorio, ac am ei berfformiadau o emynau a chaneuon gwerin ei famwlad. Pam, felly, y mae'r disgrifiad o David Lloyd fel llestr bregus mor dreiddgar o addas? Ymgais ywr cofiant hwn i ateb y cwestiwn. Er mwyn cyflwyno cipolwg ar fywyd David Lloyd, mae Hywel Gwynfryn yn mynd ir afael r straeon am fercheta cyson y canwr, ynghyd 'i broblemau yfed, ei iselder ysbryd, ar pwysau trwm a deimlair tenor i ddiddanui edmygwyr. Ym 1954, cafodd David Lloyd ddamwain, gan dorri ei asgwrn cefn, a bu cryn amheuaeth a ddeuai fyth yn l ir llwyfan cyhoeddus. Nid oedd modd iddo berfformio am chwe blynedd; ni ddychwelodd i'r llwyfan tan Eisteddfod Ryngwladol Llangollen 1960, a bu farw ym mis Mawrth 1969 yn 56 mlwydd oed. Glwr ym mhwll y Parlwr Du yng ngogledd sir y Fflint oedd tad David Lloyd, a bur mab ifanc, dawnus yn cystadlu mewn eisteddfodau lleol. Ond y gwir drobwynt oedd Eisteddfod Licswm, 1933, lle enillodd y wobr gyntaf am berfformiad eithriadol fel tenor. Ym 193334 enillodd ysgoloriaeth i astudio yn ngholeg y Guildhall yn Llundain. Penderfynodd ei derbyn, ond oherwydd tlodi ar yr aelwyd ym Merthen-gam, arferai ganu mewn tafarnau ac mewn nosweithiau diwylliannol yng nghapeli Cymraeg y brifddinas. Ac nid oedd y gwaith academaidd yn hawdd iddo chwaith, er iddo ennill pob gwobr oedd ar gael gan y Guildhall i'w chynnig iddo. Aeth ati i ddysgu chwarae'r piano a darllen cerddoriaeth, ac aeth ymlaen i berfformio ar lwyfannau cyhoeddus, gan gynnwys nifer o dai opera, ledled Prydain. Yn mis Awst 1937 bun unawdydd yn un o gyngherddau Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Machynlleth, ac ymhen llai na blwyddyn roedd wedi gadael y Guildhall. Wedi hynny, bu'n perfformio ar nifer o lwyfannau ledled Ewrop ac mewn operu yn Glyndebourne a Sadler's Wells, gan dderbyn sylwadau eithriadol garedig yn y wasg boblogaidd. Mae pennod 10 yn cyfeirio at gychwyn yr Ail Ryfel Byd, ac am bum mlynedd David Lloyd oedd Musician Lloyd 2737420 ym mand y Gwarchodlu Cymreig. Roedd blynyddoedd y rhyfel yn fwrn arno, ond roedd yn dal i berfformio mewn cyngherddau a digwyddiadau eraill, er yr awgrymir iddo ddioddef o iselder ysbryd ac o bosibl anhwylder meddyliol oherwydd y pwysau gwaith trwm yn y cyfnod hwn. Eto, drwy'r cyfan, roedd yn mwynhau statws eiconaidd yng Nghymru erbyn y 1940au. Yn dilyn y rhyfel, cynyddu a wnaeth ei boblogrwydd, a bu'n cymryd rhan mewn gwyliau ar y cyfandir. Bu'n ymwelydd cyson 'r stiwdio recordio rhwng 1940 a 1947, a dechreuodd gyfrannu hefyd at raglenni radio o bryd i'w gilydd. Ond, ysywaeth, roedd y problemau seicolegol ar cyfnodau o iselder ysbryd yn amlhau, a chynyddu hefyd wnaeth ei ymrwymiadau cyhoeddus. Ym 1953 cafodd siom am na dderbyniodd wahoddiad i berfformio ym Mhrifwyl y Rhyl, ac ni fu ar lwyfan yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol am chwe blynedd wedi hynny. Ym mis Mai 1954 cafodd ddamwain ddifrifol wrth ymarfer yn stiwdior BBC ym Mharc Cinmel, ac ni fu modd iddo berfformio wedyn tan 1959. Cynyddai ei broblemau ariannol, ac aeth i ddibynnu'n helaeth ar alcohol. Collodd ei drwydded yrru ar fwy nag un achlysur. Daeth ag achos cyfreithiol yn erbyn y BBC am 'loss of earnings', ac yn y gyfrol ceir cofnod manwl or achos llys. Bu'r BBC yn ddigon eangfrydig i gynnig ychydig o waith radio iddo, a dychwelodd i lwyfan Eisteddfod Ryngwladol Llangollen ym 1960. Cafodd lawdriniaeth led lwyddiannus ar ei gefn, ond dychwelyd wnaeth yr iselder creulon, a methiant fur llawdriniaeth bellach yn Lerpwl. Ond ymddangosodd ar y teledu, dan adain TWW y tro hwn, gan droi ei gefn ar y BBC bron yn llwyr. Daeth mwy o waith a gwahoddiadau i'w ran o 1960 ymlaen, ond pur aflwyddiannus oedd taith i America a Chanada. Yn l yng Nghymru, fodd bynnag, derbyniodd nifer fawr o wahoddiadau i berfformio ledled y wlad, ond erbyn hynny roedd ei gyfnod euraid wedi dod i ben, a blynyddoedd hir a digalon at ei gilydd oedd y rhai rhwng 1966 a'i farw ym 1969, yn dilyn damwain yn ei gartref. Darperir ar ein cyfer wledd o ffotograffau sydd yn darlunio pob cyfnod ym mywyd y canwr hwn. J.
