About the Book

This is the story of one of Mynydd Cerrig's characters. Nigel Owens is a familiar figure on the 'Noson Lawen' stage and the S4C show 'Jonathan', and is considered as one of the best rugby referees in the world. But before reaching his current status in the world of professional rugby, he went through an excruciating personal crisis.

Review :
Mae Nigel Owens yn un o ddyfarnwyr rygbi gorau'r byd. Fe'i dewisiwyd fel yr unig ddyfarnwr o Gymru ar gyfer Cwpan y Byd 2007 a bu'n gyfrifol am ddyfarnu rhai o gemau mwyaf allweddol 2008. Ond cyn cyrraedd uchelfannau'r byd rygbi bu trwy argyfwng personol dirdynnol. Am flynyddoedd ni allai wynebu'r hyn ydoedd - roedd person y tu mewn iddo yn trio dod mas ... Ef oedd y person cyntaf i "ddod mas" fel dyn hoyw yn y byd rygbi proffesiynol. Ers gwneud hynny, newidiodd ei fywyd er gwell, a blodeuodd ei yrfa rygbi a darlledu. Yn y gyfrol hon mae Nigel yn gwbl onest am ei fywyd personol a chyhoeddus, fel dyfarnwr a diddanwr. Mae'r tudalennau'n byrlymu o'r hiwmor a'r cynhesrwydd a'i gwnaeth yn un o'r cymeriadau mwyaf poblogaidd ar lwyfannau a meysydd rygbi trwy Gymru a thu hwnt. Hunangofiant Arloesol Nigel Owens Daeth bron i bedwar cant o bobl i glwb rygbi Pontyberem i ddathlu cyhoeddi hunangofiant y dyfarnwr a’r diddanwr poblogaidd Nigel Owens. Ymhlith y gwesteion roedd rhai o sêr rygbi Cymru yn cynnwys Shane Williams, Gethin Jenkins a Jonathan Thomas yn ogystal â’i fentor fel dyfarnwr Derek Bevan. Hanner Amser yw teitl y gyfrol sy’n bwrw golwg gwbl onest ar fywyd personol a chyhoeddus Nigel o’i ddyddiau fel bachgen yn Mynyddcerrig hyd at ei yrfa ddisglair fel un o ddyfarnwyr gorau’r byd. Dyma’r hunangofiant cyntaf gan berson sy’n agored hoyw yn Gymraeg ac wrth drafod y gyfrol dywedodd Nigel, “Ro’n i wedi penderfynu o’r dechre mod i’n mynd i fod yn onest yn y llyfr… yr holl fusnes o fod yn hoyw a cheisio cymryd bywyd yn hunan. Fel arall bydde pobl ddim yn meddwl fod hwn yn hunangofiant go iawn.” Yn ogystal â’i fywyd personol ceir llwyth o storiâu doniol a dadlennol o’i gyfnod fel bachgen a’i fryd ar ffermio, fel gofalwr yn ysgol Maes yr Yrfa ac fel dyfarnwr yn troi ymhlith mawrion y byd rygbi. Gwerthwyd dros dri chant o gopïau yn ystod y noson, ac eisoes mae’r Lolfa a gyhoeddodd y llyfr, yn poeni y bydd angen iddynt ail-argraffu cyn y Nadolig yn dilyn yr ymateb rhyfeddol a gafwyd i’r gyfrol hyd yn hyn. Mae’r llinell yn aml yn denau rhwng y dwys a’r digrif – gofynnwch i Nigel Owens. Dyna’r argraff fwyaf mae rhywun yn ei chael o ddarllen Hanner Amser – cyfrol y dyfarnwr rygbi rhyngwladol, y diddanwr a’r Cymro Cymraeg hoyw enwocaf oll erbyn hyn, siŵr o fod. Ond tu ôl i hyder a llwyddiant amlwg Nigel Owens, mae yna ansicrwydd mawr hefyd, a hynny’n golygu bod yr hunangofiant yma'n fwy na dim ond un stori ddoniol ar ôl y llall. Mae’n trafod ei gyfnodau tywyllaf wrth iddo geisio dod i delerau â’i rywioldeb, bwlimia, a phum mlynedd o gamddefnyddio tabledi steroid oherwydd yr ‘obsesiwn i edrych yn dda’. Daeth yn agos at ladd ei hun ganol y nawdegau, gan feddwl ar y pryd mai ‘un ffordd odd ‘na mas o’r dryswch’. Os oes angen dewrder i fod yn ddyfarnwr rygbi neu i sefyll o flaen cynulleidfa i ddweud jôcs, yna mae Nigel Owens yn dangos y rhinwedd hwnnw unwaith eto fan hyn drwy ysgrifennu ei hunangofiant. Mae Hanner Amser yn llyfr fydd o ddiddordeb i gefnogwyr rygbi a gwylwyr rhaglenni teledu fel y Noson Lawen a Jonathan – pobl sydd eisiau cael cip y tu ôl i’r llenni. Mae yna le amlwg hefyd i Gwm Gwendraeth a’i bobl. Ond yn bwysicach, efallai, mae’r stori emosiynol sydd i’w hadrodd am ‘ddod mas’ yn un sy'n werth ei chlywed, ac yn un all fod o ‘gymorth i rai sy mewn sefyllfa debyg’. A ddylai rhywun ysgrifennu hunangofiant a hithau ond yn ‘Hanner Amser’? Mae’n cyfaddef ei hun na all ddweud y cyfan y mae’n ei ddymuno am rai hyfforddwyr a chwaraewyr gan ei fod o’n dal i ddyfarnu. Ond un peth sy’n sicr, mae hi wedi cymryd tipyn o asgwrn cefn i gyhoeddi hunangofiant mor onest – asgwrn cefn y dyfarnwr a’r digrifwr, Nigel Owens.
