About the Book

Advances in computational methods and the ability to model systems more precisely now enable hazards to be quantified, their effects to be simulated and risk analysis to be pursued with greater accuracy, providing for more effective risk management. These developments are not only important for all areas of human endeavour but have particular relevance to environmental issues where the risks involved are substantial. Effective risk management and the mitigation of possible hazards have become a high priority of government and a public concern. This volume of the Transactions of Wessex Institute contains papers presented at RISK 2008, the 6th International Conference on Computer Simulation Risk Analysis and Hazard Mitigation, covering a series of important topics which are of current research interest and have practical applications. This volume contains contributions in many aspects of risk analysis and hazard mitigation, ranging from specific amounts of risk mitigation associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards. The proceedings has been arranged into the following sections: Estimation of Risk; Risk Management; Vulnerability; Geomorphic Risk; Network Systems; Climate Change Risks; Hazard Prevention, Management and Control; Security in Public Places - the SERKET Project; Transportation Safety; Safe Ship Operations.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Estimation of risk Hazards that threaten Greek wetlands: the case of Lake Koronia; Application of a flood risk model to the Thames Estuary for economic benefit assessment; A GIS tool for flood risk analysis in Flanders (Belgium); Occurrence neighbourhoods and risk assessment from landslide hazard in northern Spain; The effect of the silting phenomenon on the characteristic volumes and the lake basins in the Somesul Cald reservoirs cascade system; Propagation of environmental risk from contaminant transport through groundwater and stream networks; A quantitative microbial risk assessment of helminth ova in reusing sludge for agricultural production in developing countries; Assessment of the anthropogenic and natural risks in environmental and toxicological studies; The local confidence uncertainty plume of SAKWebA(c); Seismic risk assessment of the rural road network; Risk analysis and safety in LPG storage: the Indexed Method; Assessment of fatality risk in collisions with cable median barriers in the state of Washington; An integrated LCA/LCC framework for assessing product sustainability risk; The prediction and mapping of coastal flood risk associated with storm surge events and long-term sea level changes; European digital content sharing services for health protection and occupational risk prevention Section 2: Risk management Remote sensing satellite imagery and risk management: image based information extraction; Recent development of tsunami disaster reduction management in Japan after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami; Towards a shared method to classify contaminated territories in the case of an accidental nuclear event: the PRIME project; Development of a radioecological risk assessment tool for the Toulon marine area; Vulnerability index for risk evaluation: an approach for safety on dams in downstream valleys; Risk management in the aeronautical industry: results of an application of two methods; Risk typology; Ranking risky alternatives: innovations in subjective utility analysis; Analysis of the Y2K problem from the viewpoint of risk communication; Development and applications of a multiple risk communicator; Using statistical analysis to mitigate risk in environmental programs; The implementation of a new ISO 22000 in the Cyprus olive oil industry Section 3: Vulnerability Vulnerability, sensibility or coastal indicators?
