About the Book

The prize-winning volume of the Daniel Owen Memorial Prize at the Newport Welsh National Eisteddfod 2004, being a lively novel about the adventures of a 30-year old soldier during one day spent at the 2003 National Eisteddfod, with various witty and scathing comments about contemporary issues in Wales.

Review :
Stori – nage naratif – tylwyth teg ein dyddiau ni ydi’r gwaith hwn. Fel y pwysleisiwyd gan amryw, y mae’n gwbwl wahanol i weithiau buddugol eraill Robin Llywelyn. Nid ffantasi sydd yma: ond go brin mai realiti sydd yma ychwaith, er bod yna elfennau cryf o hynny. Hanes un dydd Wil Chips (sillefir chips yn Saesneg yma, ond yn fwy Cymraeg mewn mannau eraill) yn Eisteddfod Meifod 2003 sydd yn y llyfr. Hogyn o ardal Blaenau Ffestiniog ydi o; tad trallodus, am fod ei wraig wedi mynd â’i ddau blentyn i’w chanlyn i’r Alban; cyn-filwr sydd wedi gweld ymladd mewn mannau enbyd, gan gynnwys Irac. Yn yr eisteddfod y mae’n cyfarfod ei hen gyfaill Gwyn Bont (Gwyn ap Llwyd), deallusyn parablus; Delyth Wyn, merch o ardal Meifod; ac Alun, perchennog Dolabram, hen dŷ helaeth yn yr un ardal, ac eraill. Y mae yma giamocs a chadw reiat digrif ar brydiau, gan gynnwys presenoldeb Wil mewn gwenwisg prifardd (Iwan Llwyd) ar lwyfan y pafiliwn; ond y mae yma, hefyd, lawer o fyfyrio dwys iawn ar faterion mawr, gan gynnwys y rhyfel yn Irac. (Mewn cromfachau yma, dylid nodi fod yna gryn dipyn o ddefnydd 'cilyddol' yn y gwaith, lle mae’r awdur yn dwyn ei gyfeillion a’i gydnabod i mewn iddo – y mae dwyn Iwan Llwyd iddo yn enghraifft o hynny.) Y mae diwedd y llyfr yn rhagweladwy o tua deuparth y ffordd drwyddo ac yn gymysgedd o wireddu breuddwydion (yr elfen dylwyth teg) a rhywfaint o weledigaeth fusnes Rheolwr Gyfarwyddwr Portmeirion. Gwir fod yr awdur wedi lleoli ei brif gymeriad yn ardal Blaenau Ffestiniog, lle roedd siawns i iaith hogiau go-iawn fod yn eithaf rhywiog – hyd yn ddiweddar; ond y mae iaith Wil yn mynd y tu hwnt i realaeth. Yn wir, y mae safon yr iaith, sydd yma yn ei ffurfiau llafar gogleddol – gan gynnwys ambell ffurf sy’n or-lafar i mi, megis 'glaswallt', 'mathamatag', 'colag' – yn dra choeth. Ffurfiau gogleddol, ac nid Meifodaidd, a geir hyd yn oed yng ngeneuau cymeriadau o’r ardal honno – ar wahân i un 'Niege' cyfeiliorn. Y mae iaith y llyfr yn iaith sy’n seiliedig ar lawnder iaith yr awdur ei hun. Hynny ydi, y mae yma 'buro iaith y llwyth', fel y dywedodd T. S. Eliot unwaith am iaith y bardd. Yr wyf gant y cant o blaid yr egwyddor hon o roi i awdur y cyfle i ddefnyddio holl bosibiliadau ei iaith, yn lle bod yn rhaid iddo ei gau ei hun o fewn cyfyngiadau mwy llythrennol-realistig llafar beunyddiol y rhan fwyaf ohonom. Y mae Robin Llywelyn yn gwneud hyn yn ddeheuig iawn gan wneud i bethau 'swnio' yn naturiol. At hyn, y mae Robin Llywelyn wedi creu yma Gwyn Bont, y mae ei ddiddordebau deallusol yn adlewyrchiad digon teg o ddiddordebau’r awdur ei hun, fe allwn dybio. Y mae’r cymeriad hwn yn rhoi cyfle i’r awdur draethu am bob math o wybodaethau a damcaniaethau. Ac y mae Wil ac eraill yn barod i wrando, hyd yn oed os ydi Wil ei hun yn teimlo ar ei galon y dylai brotestio, braidd yn rhy reolaidd, am yr holl draethu – a ddylai fod yn drwm, ond sydd, mewn gwirionedd, yn hynod o ddifyr. (Gyda llaw, y mae Rheolwr Gyfarwyddwr Portmeirion i’w weld yma ac acw yn y gwaith, hefyd, mewn trafodaethau ar winoedd a choginio, ond y mae o wedi gweithio’r diddordebau hyn, yn deg iawn, i gyfansoddiad ei gymeriadau.) Wedyn, y mae yma brofiadau Wil mewn rhyfel. Llwyddodd yr awdur i wneud y rheini’n arteithiol. Y profiadau hyn ydi’r pethau mwyaf dwys yn y gwaith, ac y maen nhw wedi lliwio cymeriad Wil: y mae’n gymeriad sydd, trwy bob helynt, yn deimladwy, ac yn un y mae ei gariad at ei blant yn sylfaenol yn ei fywyd. Y mae yna brofiad arall sy’n rhedeg drwy’r gwaith, a hynny ydi sefyllfa’r Gymraeg. Yr ymdrech i gynnig ateb i ddirni’r sefyllfa honno ydi un o brif ysgogiadau’r gwaith, a’r hyn sy’n dwyn y prif gymeriadau i berthynas â’i gilydd. A ydyn nhw’n byw’n hapus am byth wedyn yn Nolabram? Wel, does ond gobeithio eu bod nhw.
