About the Book

  • 30 double-page spreads at each of three levels – B1, B2 and C1 … which means that these books are the only ones you need to teach academic grammar.
  • Each double-page spread is anew EAP grammar point … which means
    • it is easy to navigate through the book
    • the spreads can be used to support any course in Academic English
  • Each new point is put into:
    • a syntactic context … which means that the student builds up a complete picture of complexity in reading and writing academic English
    • an academic context with all examples and exercises on a spread relating to a particular academic topic … which means that the student is not constantly faced with a new topic and lexical set before addressing different exercises related to the point
  • Each new point is explained in English in a small box … which means that the teacher can translate the point when working with monolingual classes, then switch to English to work with the exercises
  • Skills notes tell the student how to deal with the point:
    • when they are reading academic English
    • when they are writing academic English
  • Exercises practice separately:
    • reading skills
    • writing skills
  • Points build through the book … which means that students gradually read and write longer and more sophisticated sentences
  • All exercises are fully keyed at the back of the book … which means:
    • teachers are fully supported when using the spreads in class
    • students can use the spreads for self-study
  • Additional exercises for each spread are available FREE online with an Over to You section, for students to try to use the point in freer writing.
Additional exercises for each spread are available as a free download at innovapress.com/grammar

About the Author :
Terry Phillips has worked in ELT for more than 40 years as a teacher, teacher trainer, manager, language school owner, author and ELT consultant. As an author, he has been a freelance writer with his wife Anna for the last 20 years, producing more than 180 published books in ELT, including many works for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), including the multi-level EAP course, Progressive Skills in English. Terry’s books are taught in a large number of universities and language centres in the UK and around the world, and the original EAP course, Skills in English, was highly commended in The Duke of Edinburgh’s English Speaking Union (ESU) Award for 2004, and the English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) series which Terry produced the syllabus for and series-edited, won the ESU award in 2009. A significant feature of all Terry’s work in EAP has been the recognition that complexity in academic English is very different from complexity in general English. This recognition has led Terry to develop materials within coursebooks to teach the syntax of English as well as the tense forms. EAP Grammar in Context brings together the results of years of research and work on suitable activities in this area. Terry holds an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading, UK, and a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults (now DELTA) from the Royal Society of Arts, London. During a long career in TEFL, Anna has worked in all first and middle management roles and, through her co-founding and management of Capital Institute (the International House school in Oman) has had invaluable experience in teaching and writing for monolingual and monocultural groups, the majority of language learners around the world. Her time working in the Middle East provided her with a great deal of insight into ways of helping learners of an exotic language to learn English. Regarding materials development, as a co-author of the Progressive Skills in English series of books for academic English, and the Moving into … series for academic and vocational English, Anna has had the opportunity to look at fresh ideas for the teaching of English. These include content- and skills-based approaches, as well as courses based on syntactic grammar syllabuses.
