About the Book

Encompassing papers presented at the 25th International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution, this book is the latest from a successful conference series. International academics and air pollution experts address various aspects of air pollution and provide an insight into the science and policy frameworks. The management of air pollution is one of the most challenging problems facing the international community. The need to balance concern for the environment with the demand for generating economic growth makes air pollution a particularly challenging issue, requiring global attention and cooperation. Science can help us identify the nature and scale of air pollution impacts and it has become essential in guiding government decisions regarding the most appropriate and effective regulations. This book presents advances in our knowledge of the science of air pollution. The Air Pollution series of conferences has consistently recognised that science remains the key to identifying the nature and scale of air pollution impacts and reaffirmed that science is essential in the formulation of policy relevant information for regulatory decision making. The conference series also acknowledged, at a very early stage, that science alone will not improve a polluted atmosphere. Scientific knowledge derived from well-designed studies needs to be allied with additional technical and economic studies in order to ensure cost effective and efficient mitigation. Leading research originating all over the world is included and covers the subsequent topics: Transport Problems; Air Pollution Modelling; Monitoring and Measuring; Case Studies; Indoor Air Pollution; Innovative Technologies; Exposure and Health Effects.

Table of Contents:
Contents Section 1: Transport problems A review of evidence on the cost-effectiveness of local authority activities to reduce exposure to air pollution from road traffic; An assessment of PM2.5 reductions as a result of transport fleet and fuel policies addressing CO2 emissions and climate change Section 2: Air pollution modelling Identification and analysis of source contributions to the air quality in the Amsterdam region; Assessment of planetary boundary layer schemes of the WRF-Chem model in the simulation of carbon monoxide dispersion in the urban area of Quito, Ecuador; The challenges, uncertainties and opportunities of bioaerosol dispersion modelling from open composting facilities Section 3: Monitoring and measuring Genetic polymorphisms and the risk of lung cancer in tunnel workers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sampling microbial volatile organic compounds: optimisation of flow rate and sampling time; Analysis of NOx, NO and NO2 ambient levels as a function of meteorological parameters in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; Investigation of O3 entrainment at a north-Italian monitoring station during the period 2006-2015; NO2, SO2, C6H6, O3 and PM10 levels within the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality of South Africa; Measurement and characterization of dust-fall samples from Mpumalanga Province, South Africa; The relationship between coastal West African dust level and Caribbean island dust; Visibility estimates from atmospheric and radiometric variables using artificial neural networks; Prediction of carbon monoxide (CO) atmospheric pollution concentrations using meterological variables Section 4: Case studies The influence of BTEX landfill gas emissions: a case study of residents in Roodepoort, Gauteng, South Africa; Household energy use and emission; Emission factor assessment for two firewood stoves; Characterization and treatment of odorous food fermentation process emissions via pilot-scale biofilter Section 5: Indoor air pollution Assessment of indoor air in Estonian straw bale and reed houses; Considerations on reduction of indoor air pollution from radioactive emissions from building materials and the ground Section 6: Innovative technologies Use of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash for the removal of hydrogen sulphide (H2S); NO2 and VOCs depollution in garage prototypes using innovative concretes and mortars Section 7: Exposure and health effects Prediction of hospitalizations caused by respiratory diseases by using data mining techniques: some applications in Curitiba, Brazil and the metropolitan area; Effect of different air flow rates on the collection of atmospheric mold spores of different sizes by a slit impactor; Metal concentration study in a population living in the vicinity of an oil refinery Author index
