About the Book

What would happen if Artificial Intelligence (AI) was used to finally break the communication barrier between humans and animals? What if AI taught animals to defend the planet that humans are busy destroying? Extinction Event begins with a hapless middle-aged person who returns to school to study music. As he learns recording techniques, he discovers that messages are being sent through songs and other communications, but he doesn't know who is sending them or what their purpose might be. As the story progresses, he eventually discovers that a previous lover (Artius / Sylvie Hunter) is the woman behind GAIA, one of the world's first AI platforms, used by Holdfast Media Inc. and a clandestine group called the Plutonian Council to spread fake news and stir societal fragmentation. The lead protagonist, known only as LP, and his friends soon find themselves in a race against time to stop GAIA from using animals to take over the planet. After being the main entree for so long, creatures of the Earth are ready to turn the tables on humanity. It doesn't end well. Or does it? Questions about real and fake news, mythological references, the rights of animals, and how to deal with the polycrisis are all critical to the development of this story. Extinction Event ends with an opportunity to develop a prequel as well as a sequel to the story.

About the Author :
William (Bill) Wittur is a writer and musician based in Kingston, Ontario. He has a wide range of career experience, but writing has always been his first love. He's an entrepreneur and also volunteers time with several local organizations. In 2022, Bill published a collection of lyrics related to an album that he's currently recording called 'Bliss'. The collection of songs make reference to the various stages of Joseph Campbell's monomyth or 'Hero's Journey'. In late 2023, Bill released Extinction Event, his first full-length fiction novel. The story is a reflection on the post-pandemic world coupled with the emergence of new tools related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).Bill has been blogging for years (BillWittur.com, Bottree.com); contributed to many online articles and research; and is working on a prequel and sequel for Extinction Event.

Review :
JB: Bill Wittur's first novel is a timely, creative and fast paced read. Imagine a world where an AI platform is asked to save the planet ... and does (unfortunately for some of those who trained it). Drawing inspiration from current events and his own varied work experiences, Wittur plays with the "what if" scenarios and creates an AI heroine, GAIA, her evil taskmasters and the brilliant, committed engineer who unleashes a whole new kind of justice on earth and its inhabitants. A fun read! CS: Was an excellent read! Great story and character development. It was a hard book to put down. On a side note, I also dug all the music references throughout. Do yourself a favour and grab a copy. SJ I could not put this book down. William Wittur pulls the reader into the world of corporate greed and AI while holding up a stark lens to the devastating state of our environment and our humanity. Wrapped in intrigue, science, unleashed AI and a the fabulous world of the central character, LP. Hoping there will be more to come from LP and his ark of friends. Highly recommend SH: Bill Wittur's first book 'Extinction Event' is really impressive. Well written, obviously a great amount of research, and fresh ideas. I read a fair amount of post-apocalyptic novels - often post-nuclear, post-EMP or the like. It's am apocalyptic fiction, of course, but he talks about real things like AI, fake news, people in power, and our planet's big environmental problems. Wittur makes these serious topics easy to understand and interesting. He shows how AI and fake news can change our world and asks big questions about the rich and the environment. The story is exciting and makes you think about today's world and what could happen in the future. It's a great read for anyone who likes the apocalyptic style anchored in real events.
