About the Book

Winner - 2025 Independent Author Awards (Memoir & Historical Nonfiction) Silver Medal - 2025 Readers' Favorite Literary Competition (Nonfiction) Runner-Up - 2025 London Book Festival (Memoir) Winner - 2024 Literary Titan Book Award They shoved his head into the toilet-a baptism of dirty water and urine. They drew a Star of David on his forehead. And that was just another day at school. Set against the brutal corridors of 1970s England, The Hate Game: Screaming in the Silence is a raw, darkly funny memoir of trauma, resilience, and reluctant transformation. Gary Trew didn't grow up in a warzone, but Knoll Boys School came close. There, violence was routine, bullying was institutional, and anti-Semitic torment was just part of the curriculum. Teachers turned a blind eye. Survival meant silence. But beyond the school gates? Chaos, contradictions-and love. A scripture-quoting mother with a flair for curses. A pipe-smoking father who barely spoke but never stopped caring. A house full of odd rituals, awkward hugs, and flashes of humour in the darkness. Told with searing honesty and wicked wit, The Hate Game is more than a memoir of abuse-it's a story of defiance, emotional survival, and growing up working-class in a country that didn't care. If you loved Educated, A Child Called "It", Angela's Ashes, or The Glass Castle, prepare to meet a voice you won't forget.

About the Author :
Even though Gary has lived in Canada for over twenty years, his close friends and work colleagues still call him "that funny British guy" due to his accent and quick-witted sense of humour. He has successfully navigated careers in the police, the ministry, and in social work. His work as an investigator with abused and neglected children and youth has taught him the value of laughter in the face of life's challenges.Gary holds degrees in chemistry & biochemistry, and social work. He has a deep affection for Marmite, sunshine, spicy food, and Cadbury's chocolate. Additionally, he is a dedicated fan of the Brighton & Hove Albion football club and Vancouver Canucks.Gary added another feather to his cap by publishing a humorous crime fiction book under his pen name, Denny Darke. The book, 'The Man with the Pink Sombrero, ' is a testament to Gary's creative side and ability to find humour in unexpected scenarios.

Review :
Reader Views (Stephanie Elizabeth Long): For readers who love memoirs, especially ones brimming with humor and grit, you won't want to miss out on Gary Trew's The Hate Game: Screaming in Silence It is clear that this memoir is a true labor of love; the emotional writing, with its no-holds-barred style, is engaging and from the heart-you won't want to put it down! Entrada Editorial Review: The Hate Game: Screaming in the Silence by Gary Trew is an emotional memoir of Trew's formative years, from eleven years old and into college years. This is a tremendous memoir about the challenges of overcoming abuse, learning to love others, and, overwhelmingly, how to love yourself. The BookLife Prize: A raw and powerful memoir. Trew's text is sharp, witty, and brutally engrossing, evoking 70s England with excellent attention to detail and a sparkling narrative. His use of language is consistently laced with humor while his traumatic experiences are related with guts and passion. Trew is an enigmatic narrator, brilliantly taking the reader on a journey filled with daily challenges, a loving family environment and some deeply troubling school experiences. Readers' Favorite (M. Ogaja): In The Hate Game, Trew describes his experiences in a vivid and captivating manner. I enjoyed this book immensely, largely due to Trew's excellent narrative of a very traumatic period in his life. His masterful balance of comedy and heartbreak kept me engaged to the last page. Gary Trew's gripping memoir, The Hate Game: Screaming in the Silence, is sure to make you laugh out loud as well as cry. It's a tale of survival, of change, and of the eternal power of love and laughter. It's a must-read for anybody looking for a moving yet optimistic story. It's 5 stars from me and I look forward to anything else this author decides to write as well. Readers' Favorite (L.E. Clarke): The cruelty of some of the students, and the lack of control by the staff took my breath away. Before you even start reading, it states that you will laugh and cry with Gary, and I did. His story shocked and amused me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Independent Book Review (Elizabeth Zender): The Hate Game is a poignant and timely true story-a recommended read for anyone in need of courage. Readers' Favorite (Danelle Petersen): The Hate Game is not for the faint-hearted.
