About the Book

JT Oney underwent several cancer operations on his left leg during the 2006-2009 time period prior to the leg being amputated as a result of Agent Orange. During his recovery he took a leave of absence from his teaching position at a small Northern Virginia college and during this time wrote numerous letters to his family about his analysis of current events. One of his brothers called them "the mutterings of a madman" so to his utter delight he found they annoyed his family and therefore proceeded to write many more. His letters are divided into two major parts - War and Politics - since those areas seem to have dominated the news during this period. Under War he begins by analyzing what he considers the major southern battles and the turning point of the Revolutionary War. He then advances a couple of centuries to discuss three lesser known organizations during World War 2 who he feels played a major role in allowing the allies to get off the Normandy beaches: the SOE, OSS and the Jedburghs. He then advances several decades and analyzes the battle of Tora Bora which he feels was mismanaged resulting in our having to return to Afghanistan in the attempt to find and kill bin Laden. Perhaps most interesting in this section are his letters to his nephew who spent a one year tour of duty in Afghanistan stationed coincidentally near the Tora Bora mountains. In this section he also comments on Torture, Counterterrorism and Counterinsurgency. He next takes up Politics. In this section he analyzes the current economic climate placing blame on Derivatives and the Clinton/Bush administrations. His comments in this category are interesting due to his analysis of Demand (Keynesian) versus Supply (Friedmanian) economic theory and their impact on the current recession. His comments then turn to Health care which he feels define the ethical character of our nation in terms of how we care for our less fortunate citizens. In this section he also asks whether or not our constitution is a suicide pact based upon how we handle terrorist. He then goes on to comment on the Tea Party, Gun Control and, finally, discusses news and talking heads. Hopefully you will be as annoyed by his letters as his family.
