About the Book

In an era of change in education, the time is right to refocus attention on guided reading practices. Guided reading remains an anchor in classroom literacy programs, but how has it changed with the new shifts in education? In this book, Dr. Michael P. Ford provides a practical resource for guided reading. He explains how it evolved, why it's still important, how to fit it into a comprehensive literacy program, how to select texts, how to assess and support students, and how to position it for intervention. Also included is an Appendix with a listing of recommended guided reading books.

Dr. Michael P. Ford is a former first grade and Title I Reading teacher. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh where he worked with pre-service and in-service teachers for 29 years as a professor and department chair in the Department of Literacy and Language. Review :
...a wonderful resource as well as an asset for any teacher's professional library. Inexperienced teachers will gain an understanding as to how to get guided reading going in their classroom and experienced teachers will find helpful support, especially for struggling early readers. As an experienced consumer of research I found this book grounded in solid research about primary guided reading and my pre-service primary teachers found practical ideas for practice as well as some inspiration. I think both types of teacher will find nuggets of knowledge to stratify intellectual and concrete challenges to this subject.-- "Dr. Becky McTague, Assoc. Professor of Language and Literacy" Guided Reading: What's New and What's Next? provides a road map that will significantly influence every teacher's literacy instruction. As we are nudged to reflect on our beliefs and practices, we develop deeper knowledge of how to help each student achieve success. Having this book in your hands is like having Mike Ford standing in your classroom. He thoughtfully guides your instruction. You will feel a new confidence in teaching Guided Reading after putting his expert advice into action.-- "Dr. Mary Jo Fresch, Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University" I must also tell you that the book Guided Reading is about the best on this topic that I have ever seen! I would have loved to have had it both as a classroom teacher and a literacy coach!-- "Melissa Turkey" Thorough and complete. Ford's book on guided reading gives experienced and novice teachers a wealth of ideas about how to best implement guided reading. One of the most important features of the book is that Ford provides the why behind the how, helping teachers understand why they do what they do.-- "Dr. Michael F. Opitz"
