Excerpt: ... actions. If this doctrine appears to Mr. Smith to be "portentous," I am quite content to let it appear so. VI. Mr. Smith defends his practice of caricaturing the doctrines of his opponents, by asserting that no doctrine should be propagated " which will not stand the fair test of ridiculeV Had he said "the test of fair ridicule," he would have avoided the bold assumption that ridicule always is a fair test; but he would have suggested the somewhat dangerous inquiry whether his own ridicule is fair or not. "Whatever," says Coleridge, "must be misrepresented in order to be ridiculed, is in fact not ridiculed; but the thing substituted for itc." When an expression is made to appear in a ludicrous light by giving it a meaning wholly different from that which its author intended, it looks very like the device of a critic who is only able to ridicule by first misrepresenting. Such I believe to be the case with Mr. Smith's ridicule of the expression " moral miracles," which, in order to ridicule, he has to employ in a sense totally different from mined. Mr. Smith finds difficulty in believing that I can really suppose him to have fallen into an undesigned coincidence with Tindal. I never asserted that he coincided with Tindal's general principles; but in the particular passage to which my remark related, I believe there is as close a coincidence as can well be exhibited by two authors writing independently of each other. "The dreadful figment of the two moralities," says Mr. Smith, "has been adopted mainly to prevent men from questioning certain supposed instances of questionable morality in the Old Testamente."
