About the Book

On a dark night as you watch the sky with your friends, a rock with a fiery tail shoots across the sky. A comet! Asteroids and comets hurtle through space, sometimes a little too close to Earth. But did you know that they are linked to life on this planet? From the asteroid Ceres to Halley's comet, blast into space and enter the lonely existence of asteroids and comets.

Review :
...factual information concerning early cultural beliefs and current scientific data are offered in an easy to understand description of an immense topic. . . .This is a detailed look at comets and asteroids in the nonfiction field of space books. A solid choice for 4th grade and up.-- "Denton ISD, Texas" It can be tricky to keep all those chunks floating around in space--comets, asteroids, meteors--straight. And though these space rocks don't have quite the brain-bendingly cool allure of other cosmic wowers like black holes and supernovae, they provide a solid thematic bedrock for a wide-ranging tour of the vastness of the universe in this graphic-format title in the Adventures in Science series. Though the panels present a series of stills rather than a visual narrative, and the text is set entirely in boxed captions, the artwork has an irreverent, cartoony panache that works oddly well with the straightforward presentation of astronomical information. Speeding through the formation and layout of our solar system and the Milky Way galaxy, the compositional makeup of different space objects, a history of humankind's observation of cosmic phenomena, and looks into the future of space exploration, this book covers a lot of information in an efficient and easygoing manner.-- "Booklist" STAR REVIEW! This science graphic book series covers many topics in nature that little minds are usually curious about, from the ground around them to the sky and beyond. Elementary appropriate text will appeal to youngsters who need to understand difficult concepts such as erosion, tectonic plates, gravity, photosynthesis, and pollination. The series also covers important historic events in science such as the eruptions of Mount St. Helens and Mount Vesuvius and Halley's Comet. As one who usually finds graphic books difficult to read, I enjoyed this series and think that our younger readers will as well. It is one of the better series on science topics that appeal to this age group. Highly Recommended.-- "Library Media Connection" These two books in a new series (Adventures in Science) present scientific facts in a graphic novel format. These books are well-researched and have information that is interesting for many students. For example, The Lonely Existence of Asteroids and Comets not only describes what these bodies are made of, it also explains how scientists launched the Giotto probe to fly through the tail of Halley's Comet and analyze the substances there. Although they are written in a graphic-novel format, the books in this series contain a lot of information. The illustrations with each fact will help students to understand the concept and remember it. The only downside of this series is that, while it is formatted and illustrated like a graphic novel, it does not read like a graphic novel. There is not one dominant narrative throughout the book, instead the text and illustrations jump around to present the facts about the topic. Some young adults will not mind this, but others will find the text hard to follow. This series would be a great supplemental resource in the science classroom and it is one that students would enjoy.-- "VOYA"
