About the Book

Long gone are the 4,000 or more military war dogs that served in Vietnam. Yet, their legacy lives on with the veterans whose names are chiseled on The Wall. BEYOND THE CALL, a bittersweet war story with human interest, is set in 1965-66 at Phan Rang Air Base in II Corps, South Vietnam, with the 62nd Engineer Battalion. A 120-pound Doberman pinscher named Beauregard altered the lives of Lt. Col. Geno Ricci, Capt. Babs Brewer, Cpl. Jim Chivington and Sgt. Mack Wilson. Canine warriors are not particular to the Vietnam war era alone. Thousands of lives have been spared by highly trained war dogs from WWII to present day. Col. Ricci hates this war; but he will not allow his personal feelings to deter him from his mission of building a tactical airbase at Phan Rang. Prior to the final attack on Phan Rang, Geno and Babs take R&R together in Thailand. Upon their return, Phan Rang is hit by infiltrating Viet Cong sappers. They cause major death and destruction. During one brutal scene, Beau is stabbed several times while attempting to save his handler. Chivington's wounds are serious, and he eventually lapses into a coma. Beau is also near death. Col. Ricci is desperate. Risking his career, he goes beyond the call while attempting to protect Chington and Beau. A comatose Chivington ends up in Walter Reed Medical Center with Ricci, Brewer, Chivington's doctor and family at his deathbed. Because of Col. Ricci's political connections and Beau's meritorious service, President Johnson orders Beau home to be beside his master. Moments later, Beau's wet nose touches Chivington's hand. His tearful, matted eyes open slowly with Beau's name on his parched and crusti lips. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.
