About the Book

John Edward Griffin's Sometimes A Wall Can Really Talk: The Donovan Maxey Story chronicles the story of Donovan Maxey, a 14-year-old who discovers he has a skin disorder during a vulnerable time period in his life. His discovery of his skin problem leads him to believe he must or will have to face life living through a wall of sorts that this skin disorder presents to him. The realization he makes while living his life enveloped inside this wall, along with his conviction and dedication to distancing himself from harm, with the exception of a fight at school, leads him to discovering an interest that he becomes preoccupied and eventually captivated with. This is an interest in journalism or telling the news in front of cameras on live television. From his captivation with and discovery of this new found interest, he is able to deal with the ridicule he feels is brought on by his skin disorder. After discovering his new found interest, he is able to deal with conflicts which arise in his life more effectively. The results of his dealings with most of his issues are so effective that he is able to obtain or reach his goal of becoming a network journalist after a long and continual battle by using the resistance he has to negativity and the determination to reach his goal despite his otherwise distracting outside demeanor. Obtaining his goal to become a network journalist as a young adult gives him renewed confidence in knowing that he is looked at more for his physical and mental ability, not his physical deformity. He is then able to release himself from the invisible wall that the skin disorder has made him feel since adolescence.
