About the Book

Statistical data shows that poor workplace communications and low levels of employee occupational safety and health (OSH) literacy is a root-causal factor in a significantly high percentage of work-related deaths, diseases, injuries and losses. Particularly high-risk groups are those entering into the workplace for the first time such as school-leavers, migrant workers, new employees and persons with low levels of literacy language and learning ability. To compound the problem, these at-risk groups tend to find employment in high-risk industries such as construction, manufacturing and agriculture. New and innovative approaches are needed to tackle the issue. It has long been established that within this information age there are recognised specialist ‘sub-literacies’ such as financial literacy and computer literacy. These literacies use their own unique set of shapes, symbols, signs and meta-language. Stakeholders teach these to learners in order to better prepare them for life in today’s modern, information-driven world. OSH also uses its own unique set of shapes, symbols, signs, colours and meta-language to communicate information. This book recognises and utilises this literacy to contribute significantly to improving workplace safety, especially for those groups at greatest risk of misunderstanding OSH information. How to Understand Safety and Health Communication at Work: A Beginner's OSH Literacy Workbook does not seek to teach the subject of health and safety in-depth. Instead, it aims to give learners the basic OSH literacy skills needed to be able to identify, access and understand the basic OSH information they are likely to encounter when entering the workplace or place of vocational training. Each unit is divided into short exercises: vocabulary, signs, reading for information, identifying hazards (risk awareness) and an end-of-unit assessment. The book’s format makes it ready to be incorporated into any teaching or training situation.
