About the Book

Fluorescence imaging, at macro, micro, and submicro scales, has revolutionized biological science in the past 30 years. Immunolabelling has provided precise targeting of molecules in fixed tissue, while fluorescent proteins have enabled localization in living tissues. Fluorescent indicators enable imaging of dynamic changes in cell metabolism. This book covers, for the first time, imaging at all scales from macro to submicro (superresolution). Its authors include Robert Clegg, legendary teacher and researcher (who, sadly, passed away during the editing); Jim Pawley, editor of several editions of the Handbook of Biological Confocal Microscopy; the famous and now dispersed New Zealand team of Mark Cannell, Christian Soeller, and David Baddeley; Robert Hoffman, pioneer of whole-animal imaging in cancer research; Andreas Schoenle and Christian Eggeling on STED nanoscopy, and many more famous participants in this field. All the contributors are at the cutting edge of their field.

Table of Contents:
What Is Fluorescence?; The Ploem Fluorescence Microscope; The Confocal Fluorescence Microscope; Multiphoton Fluorescence Microscopy; Immunofluorescence; Fluorescent Proteins; Dyes for Labeling Organelles and Compartments; Indicator and Reporter Dyes; New Approaches to Cancer Therapy Using In Vivo Fluorescent- Protein Imaging; Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging; Dynamic Experiments: FRAP and Photoconversion; Förster Resonant Energy Transfer (FRET); Recording the Fluorescent Image; Practical Aspects of Localisation Microscopy; Super-Resolution Optical Microscopy with Structured Illumination; STED Nanoscopy.

About the Author :
Guy Cox is honorary associate professor at the School of Medical Science and Australian Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis, University of Sydney, Australia. He has been and is a member of several learned and professional societies, including the Australasian Society for Phycology and Aquatic Botany, Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society, Australian Speleological Federation, Phycological Society of America, USA, and Royal Microscopical Society, UK. Prof. Cox is also on the editorial board of Micron.

Review :
"Fundamentals of Fluorescence Imaging is one of those must-need textbooks for students in biomedical sciences, and I will definitely use it as such. In easy-to-read language understandable to the non-physicists or non-microscopists but in a complete way, it gives an overview of the most used fluorescence microscopy techniques. What is great about this book is also that it combines the technological part with very practical topics: sample preparation (chapter 5) and labeling of specific organelles (chapter 6–8). The book is fun to read and very instructive. I will implement it in my teaching program for sure." Prof. Dr. Marc A. M. J. van Zandvoort Maastricht University, the Netherlands "This is an excellent book on the fundamentals of fluorescent imaging. There are very few books that provide the depth of coverage this one does. The book is clearly written without mathematics." Omer Iqbal, MD, FACC, FESCLoyola University Medical Center, USA
