Chose extraordinaire! de tout temps la mode a pris les debardeurs sous sa protection. La fievre philanthropique dont tous les esprits furent atteints dans les premieres annees du legue de Louis XVI, produisit des miracles en faveur des debardeurs. Notre philanthropie est bien mesquine aupres de celle du dix-huitieme siecle. La charpie pour les Grecs, produit des loisirs patriotiques de nos femmes de banquiers, palit singulierement a cote du prix que fonda une reunion de marquises et de duchesses en faveur de l'inventeur du meilleur moyen mecanique pour mettre les trains en chantier sans entrer dans l'eau. Les livres de medecine etaient remplis de la nomenclature de toutes les maladies auxquelles les debardeurs etaient exposes. Outre les fievres aigues, les pleuresies, les peripneumonies, la toux, la dyspnee, et diverses autres affections de poitrine, il leur survenait encore, disait-on, des ulceres aux jambes extremement difficiles a guerir. In cruribus ulcera sunt sanatu difficilia, dit un medecin qui florissait vers 1784. Il fallait, a tout prix, debarrasser ces pauvres debardeurs de la dyspnee et des ulceres, et nul doute que l'on n'y fut parvenu, car ce que femme veut, la medecine le veut, si la Revolution francaise n'eut disperse le club des amies des Debardeurs. De nos jours, un praticien dont le talent et la bonne foi ne sauraient etre mis en doute, Parent-Duchatelet, qui, lui aussi, s'etait fait debardeur par amour de la science, a publie les resultats de son sejour parmi cette classe de la population.
