Il brave les uns il punit les autres, sauve Judith de leur fureur, et se livre ensuite aveuglement a sa dangereuse amorce.--Le festin homicide est prepare, Holopherne vide la coupe fumante et boit le poison amoureux dans les yeux de Judith, puis il se retire sous sa tente. Alors Judith, saisissant son glaive, souleve le rideau de pourpre, entre, frappe, et revient tristement au milieu des juifs, qui saluent leur liberatrice par des cris de delivrance et du joie. (Theatre-Francais.--Judith, tragedie--Mademoiselle Rachel, role de Judith; Beauvalet, role d'Holopherne.) Tout manque a un pareil sujet; l'auteur a cru en adoucir la durete et en feconder la secheresse par la passion sincere et la generosite d'Holopherne; mais comment n'a-t-il pas compris qu'il aggravait ainsi l'horreur qui resulte naturellement de l'action de Judith?--Que pouvait faire le public dans ce vide de sentiments et d'interet? applaudir une versification elegante; se refugier, pour le reste, dans le silence, et murmurer ca et la, ce qui etait dans son droit. Peut-etre aurait-il du se montrer courtois et patient jusqu'au bout. Mon avis est qu'il faut tout accepter d'une...
