On voudrait, sans quitter cela, vivre de la vie d'artiste, c'est-a-dire sentir que la religion de l'art, qui n'est que l'amour du vrai et du bien, a encore des croyants, et il y en a si peu! Les uns arrivent au scepticisme par l'experience, les autres parce que, apparemment, leur coeur est vide. On voit tous les jours des gens qui desertent et qui renient jusqu'a leur mere. On se sent tout seul dans sa petite maison avec les siens, comme Noe dans son arche, voguant sur les tenebres et se demandant parfois si le soleil est mort. Alors c'est bien bon de voir arriver l'oiseau a la branche verte, et ce petit oiseau de mon jardin, comme vous l'appelez, c'est l'oiseau de la vie et un vrai fils du ciel eclaire et rallume. Quand je remets de temps en temps les pieds sur la terre, lavee par ce deluge des evenements passes depuis dix ans, j'y retrouve tout le mal d'auparavant avec un mal nouveau, une fievre de je ne sais quoi, toujours en vue de quelque chose de petit et d'egoiste, de jaloux, de faux et de bas, qui se dissimulait autrefois et qui s'affiche aujourd'hui. Et moi qui, dans la solitude, ai passe mon temps a tacher de devenir meilleure que cela, je me figure que je suis encore plus seule dans cette foule inquiete et souffrante, a laquelle je ne trouve rien a dire qui la console et la tranquillise, puisqu'elle a l'air de ne plus rien comprendre. Mais je redeviens artiste dans mon coeur, je retrouve la foi et l'esperance quand je vois une...
