About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The poetic works of Julio Cortázar, one of the fundamental authors in contemporary literature in Spanish, admired and beloved by consecutive generations of readers, are probably his least known pieces. However, poetry was always crucial to him. Written from the utmost freedom and from the margins, with great awareness of the importance of language, it explores some invisible parts of reality. It is detached form any topic, and brings together concepts that are only apparently contradictory: history and utopia, a desire both to communicate and experiment, contemplation and commitment, sensitivity and rebelliousness... This volume, in the care of Andreu Jaume, includes all the author’s poetry published to this day, including a section of unpublished poems found in the Daniel Devoto and María Beatriz Valle-Inclán Fund, delivered to the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation in Madrid. As Jaume states in an introductory note, “readers have in their hands the most comprehensive compilation that we have been able to make so far of the poetry of a writer who, in 1969, was already considered ‘an old poet’ (Cortazar signed his first book of poems in 1971), even if until then he had kept secret that other facet of his imagination, which illuminates, like a hidden fire, the richness of his well-known fictions.”

Review :
Octavio Paz
