Not illustrated. 1909 Excerpt: ...however, as to whether these advantages of the off-set cylinder are imaginary or real, many engine designers claiming that what is gained in the compression stroke is necessarily lost in friction on the cylinder walls and in compression. Pistons. Pistons used in gasoline engines are of the trunk pattern; that is, they are hollow at one end, which allows the connecting rod to vibrate within them. They must be made of considerable length, because they receive all the thrust of the connecting rod, as a gasoline engine does net have any crosshead to take up this thrust. A piston has grooves cut in its outer circumference for piston rings, and in its center it has a bushing, into which the wristpin fits. Two methods of piston construction are shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Piston Rings. Piston rings are made out of cast iron and belong to the type known as snap rings. They depend upon their own elasticity for making the piston gas-tight. It is quite import ant that no gas should leak past the pistons, as in that case the compression is considerably reduced, as is also the horse power. When making a piston ring, the ring is turned as a solid ring to fit a diameter larger than the bore. Usually the proportion is one-sixteenth larger for each three inches in diameter. The finished ring is then sawed apart and sufficient metal taken out to permit the ring to be squeezed together so as to enter the cylinder. It will then tend to expand to its original size against the sides of the cylinder. The ordinary piston ring has a straight diagonal joint across it, as shown in Fig. 5, and these joints are staggered, so that should the gas leak past one joint it will not be so likely to leak past the other.
