Excerpt: Detective Sebastian is a human detective in the not-too-distant future. He was once married to a nurse who became a Vampire after she was bitten during a shift, but despite this the two of them managed to make a life for themselves until she was discovered during one of the savage purges engineered by Antigen, his wife allowing herself to burn in the sun rather than to be captured and executed. As a result, Sebastian is sympathetic to vampires rather than the official policy of regarding them as victims of disease that must be eradicated. When Selene contacts him for information about a recent lycan raid, the two team up to attack Antigen and rescue Selene's hybrid daughter Eve. Although injured during the fight, Sebastian survives- even killing a couple of the lycans in the company with well-placed bullets-, and agrees to provide the approaching police with fake information to give Selene and her family time to escape.
