The stairs are built in two flights, with a landing between them, to avoid the fatigue of a long and unbroken ascent CHAPTER V A Stone Building. STONE building is the subject of this chapter. A church edifice is selected in order that different methods of construction and disposition may be studied. The Episcopal form of worship is adopted because of the more numerous details of church furniture and fittings required. Every church building, whatever the form of worship, has certain requirements in common. Ingress and egress must be as direct as possible, and without restriction; light and air ample and controllable; hearing and vision clear and as unobstructed as practicable. The placing of columns in the body of a church is deprecated by very many. The principal and perhaps only objection is that the columns intercept the sight. This is true to a certain extent, but as a rule it will be found that the number of seats from which the view of the chancel, or pulpit even, is absolutely taken, is very few. However, in the present instance, though the space could have been easily roofed without columns (see Fig. 20 in the text), they are inserted for an example in construction. The church is supposed to be located in a country town, and to be built on a corner. The building is placed well away from the inner lot lines, so as to insure light and air on all sides.
