The ends of the seat are secured as shown on left in Fig. 25, by housing it into the end of the pew and by placing under it a cleat secured to the upright, as shown. WVhen the pews abut against one another, as shown in the rear in Plate XXVII., Fig. I, and when their ends are against the wall, they are held by cleats, as shown in the right of Fig. 25. The width of the seat should not be less than 15 inches, the height of the back not less than 16 inches, and the distance between pews not less than 2 feet 6 inches, or far enough to allow one to pass a seated person with relative ease..
