I hogs some good alfalfa or clover hay, roots or other bulky cheap feed, asa basis, and then feed what grain is needed. Wherever it is desired to feed a full grain ration the self-feeder will do well. Concluding Points. In conclusion, it should be borne in mind that pigs on self-feeders should take plenty of exercise. As commonly built, self-feeders are not weather-proof, and rain or snow will get in if they are not under cover. Fine feeds, such as shorts, tankage and oil meal, clog readily; and one should examine the feeders at least every day to see whether all the feeds are available to the hogs. _ Self-feeders, as illustrated, will cost from six to ten dollars each for material and labor. A double feeder four feet long will readily accommodate eight to twelve hogs and ten to fifteen pigs. Where corn is the principal grain, it will usually be fed in the ear on a feedingfloor. If supplemented by shorts or tankage, these may well be supplied from a self-feeder. In any case the hogs should be on full feed before they are turned to the selffeeder. ROOT CROPS AS WINTER FEED FOR STOCK. Under many circumstances a silo can not profitably be provided. Succulent food of some kind is needed to keep the live stock--dairy cows and sheep, especially--in good condition through the winter.
