About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... nearly the bulk and so discarded them for stock feed, and use only the pumpkins. We never plant pumpkins in the field with corn. They should be planted by themselves in well manured soil. When planted with the corn they are a hindrance to late cultivation and are in the way of the corn binder. To grow a good paying crop of pumpkins the ground must be rich and the seed must be good. It is considered good practice to plant about a week after corn planting time. The hills should be about seven feet apart. We mark the field with the corn planter and use every second row. We plant about ten seeds in each hill and thin to about four plants after the danger from squash bugs is past. The striped squash bug is the chief enemy of the young plants. To prevent its ravages we use a brown powder known in the market as "Bug Death." This we apply to the plants early in the morning before there is much wind, and while the leaves are wet with dew. Vhen pumpkins are grown as they should be, a surprisingly large amount of feed may be raised on an acre of rich soil. We find the pumpkins to be the ideal preventive of worms in hogs, and they also act as a corrective when the pigs are being heavily corn fed for market. The pumpkin seeds will positively destroy intestinal worms which cause more dam age to the hogs of Minnesota than the cholera. I do not mean that they have killed more hogs outright, but I do insist that they put the hogs in a condition which invites the cholera to do its work. If you want hogs free from worms and disease, grow pumpkins and feed them, seeds and all, to your hogs. If you want to get from ten to twenty per cent more out of every bushel of corn, grow pumpkins and feed them with the corn. They keep the bowels in good...
