Extracto: El Conde Arnau (en catalan Comte Arnau o Comte l'Arnau) fue un rico noble de la mitologia catalana. Debido a varios pecados (como relacionarse con una abadesa o no hacer bien los pagos prometidos), fue condenado eternamente. Condenado a cabalgar durante toda la eternidad como alma en pena sobre un caballo negro al que le salen llamas por la boca y los ojos, el Conde l'Arnau va siempre acompanado por un grupo de perros diabolicos que le hacen de cortejo. Este personaje legendario y mitico catalan, mas conocido universalmente como "el conde Arnau," es probablemente el mas conocido de todos los espiritus, almas en pena y fantasmas del Principado. En principio, tambien es un personaje literario que tiene su origen en una cancion tradicional catalana, posiblemente aparecida en Ripoll a finales del siglo XVI en la que se narra el dialogo entre el alma del conde Arnau, que purga el incumplimiento de sus deberes militares y su viuda. Desde Ripoll, el mito se extendio a toda la zona de influencia cultural catalana y se le incorporaron elementos de una leyenda anterior, del 1017, en que se le relaciona amorosamente con una monja del monasterio de Sant Joan de les Abadesses. Fue Marian Aguilo quien reunio el material sobre el mito en 1843 y Manuel Mila y Fontanals quien lo publico en 1835.
