In point of fact, each journal has its own antagonisms and its own affiliations, and it is well that this is so, for it is only because each man builds his own house that the city becomes built, and a city in which every house is precisely like every other house, would not only be a monotonous oddity, but so far as the application of the simile to insurance journals is concerned, it would proclaim the uselessness of all but one. We must not cultivate liomogeneousness at the too great expense of variety. From among the great number of points presented to us in this very comprehensive question, it might be profitable to select several and allot them to members for the preparation of elaborate and exhaustive papers for the future consideration of the association. For example: a. Insurance is the hand-maid of commerce; journalism is the hand-maid of insurance. How can each best fulfil the great object for which it exists--insurance in promoting and benefiting commerce; journalism in upholding and benefiting insurance? b. Insurance supports journalism at a large money cost; how can journalism promote the interests of insurance so as to return to it that money cost ten, twenty, forty-fold? c. How can our journals be most effective in the promotion of legislation looking to the decrease of fires, the punishment of incendiaries, and the prevention of frauds on the life companies? d. Can we, by historical research, statistical exhibit, mathematical demonstration, technical inquiry, argument, analysis, or otherwise develop new ideas, lines of thought or plans of operation, which shall improve old methods or introduce new ones to the companies?
