Auszug: Die SMS Emden war ein deutscher Kleiner Kreuzer der Kaiserlichen Marine und wurde nach der gleichnamigen Stadt Emden getauft. Die Emden gehorte zur Dresden-Klasse. Ihr Einsatzgebiet lag uberwiegend im Fernen Osten. Mit Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde die Emden zum selbstandigen Handelskrieg in den Indischen Ozean entsandt. Dort konnte sie innerhalb von zwei Monaten 23 feindliche Handelsschiffe und zwei Kriegsschiffe versenken oder aufbringen, bevor sie am 9. November 1914 in einem Gefecht mit dem australischen Kreuzer HMAS Sydney nahe den Kokosinseln unterlag. Die Emden war der erfolgreichste deutsche Kreuzer in uberseeischen Gewassern u.
