Auszug: Die HMAS Sydney (D48) war ein nach der Stadt Sydney benannter Leichter Kreuzer der Royal Australian Navy wahrend des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Sie war einer von insgesamt drei modifizierten Kreuzern der Leander-Klasse, die fur die Royal Navy gebaut und Ende der 1930er-Jahre an die australische Marine ubergeben wurden. Die Sydney sank nach einem Gefecht mit dem deutschen Hilfskreuzer Kormoran. Die Wracks beider Schiffe wurden erst im Marz 2008 entdeckt. Der Kreuzer wurde am 26. Juni 1933 in Wallsend-on-Tyne als HMS Phaeton fur die Royal Navy auf Kiel gelegt, aber noch wahrend des Baus von Australien gekauft und am 22. September 1934 als HMAS Sydney vom Stapel gelassen.
