Auszug: Erdol ist ein in der Erdkruste eingelagertes, hauptsachlich aus Kohlenwasserstoffen bestehendes Stoffgemisch, das bei Umwandlungsprozessen organischer Stoffe entsteht. Das als Rohstoff bei der Forderung aus Speichergesteinen gewonnene und noch nicht weiter behandelte Erdol wird auch als Rohol bezeichnet. Obwohl Erdol bereits in der Antike genutzt wurde, begann die systematische Erschliessung des Rohstoffs erst in der zweiten Halfte des 19. Jahrhunderts mit ersten Bohrungen 1856 und 1858 in Niedersachsen. Bekannter wurde die Bohrung nach Ol, die Edwin L. Drake am 27. August 1859 am Oil Creek in Titusville, Pennsylvania durchfuhrte. Erdol ist ein fossiler Energietrager und dient zur Erzeugung von Elektrizitat und als Treibstoff fast aller Verkehrs- und Transportmittel. Wichtig ist Erdol zudem in der chemischen Industrie, es wird zur Herstellung von Kunststoffen und anderen Chemieprodukten benotigt. Daher ruhrt unter anderem die Bezeichnung Schwarzes Gold" wie auch die Bedeutung von zumeist politisch bedingten Olkrisen fur die Weltwirtschaft. Allein in den Jahren von 2000 bis 2009 wurden etwa 242 Milliarden Barrel - ein Barrel entspricht ungefahr 159 Liter - weltweit gefordert. Erdolfirmen wie BP gehoren zu den grossten Wirtschaftsunternehmen weltweit. Unfalle wie bei der Olpest im Golf von Mexiko 2010 haben bedeutende Umweltauswirkungen. Erdoltransportwege und deren Bewirtschaftung sind wie bei Nord Stream oder der Erdolleitung Freundschaft Gegenstand von politischen Energiestreitigkeiten wie Basis von weitreichenden Wirtschaftsentwicklungen. Die Olpreise sind wichtige Indikatoren fur die Wirtschaftsentwicklung. Unter dem Stichwort Globales Olfordermaximum wird eine Erschopfung der weltweiten wir.
