About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1801. Excerpt: ... about an inch square; the thin mqtal will not only float, but will even support a small shot or two, without sinking: the weight of the first shot will depress the leaf gold in the middle, it is true; but it will be insufficient, to overcome the cohesion of the particles of water through such an extent of surface. Another circumsftrlce, that our young readers have often observed themselves, probably is to be explained from this cohesion between the particles of water. A fly, that has gotten into a bottle, half full of water, will stand upon the surfacte of the fluid, rise from it, and fall down again more than once, without. sinking. So spiders, gnats, and other insects, will run over the surface Gf water; not on account of their specific gravity, but because their absolute gravity is so small. As some of our readers, perhaps, will not clearly comprehend what is meant by the terms absolute and specific gravity, we shall explain them in the next chapter. There are even birds, too, of the order of waders, as the rail, that will run over the surface of a lake or pond; but this must not be ascribed altogether to the cohesion of the water, which would certainly give way to a creature of such bulk. These birds frequent marshy places, and the leaves and stems of the aquatic plants, that grow in the water, and lie along it's surface, no doubt, help to support them, at the same time that they run swiftly; and the flight movemqpt they make with their wings contributes to diministi their pressure on the water. CHAP. II. OFABSOLUTE AND SPECIFIC GRAVITY. The terms absolute gravity and specific gravity very frequently occur in physics; The first is.what we express in'common life by the word weight, and signifies the whole of the power, with which a body presses downwar...
