About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1801. Excerpt: ... left between the lips, so that the air can issue out between them, many words may be spoken intelligibly, though with no very harmonious tone: but it is perhaps impossible, to articulate some of the consonants, without moving the lips more or less. Sounds maybe formed, and words uttered, not only when air is forced out through the mouth, but also when it is drawn in. This, however, is much more difficult. There have been people, in different ages, whose internal organs of speech were so flexible, and who had such skilful command over them, that they have been capable of articulating, and holding conversations, without any movement of their lips being perceptible. In such cases it is obvious, that the sound of the voice must differ from what it would be in the usual way. Most commonly it would have a somewhat obscure and hollow sound, and hence was supposed by those, who did not know how it was produced, tu be formed in the belly. On this account such people were mistakenly called ventriloquists, or speakers from the belly, and this name is still retained. The feats, that these people are said to VOL. II. L have performed, seem much more surprising in the narratives given of them, than they are in fact, when the whole of the business is understood. Perhaps my young readers will be best enabled to form an adequate idea of the subject, by being first told what they have done, and then instructed how to account for the performance. At Saint Germain-en-Laie, ten miles from Paris, lived a shop-keeper, whose name was Saint-Gille, a very ingenuous and honest man. At Martinico he had learned from an intimate friend the art of ventriloquism in the space of a week, and had made himself a great master in it by practice. Of this faculty he made no ill use, neither did...
