(d) Acid.--Solntion of sulphuric acid containing 200 cc of strongest sulphuric acid in 1,000 cc of water. (e) Barium Hydroxid.--An accurately standardized, approximately decinormal solution of barium hydroxid. (/') Indicator.--Dissolve 1 gram of phenolphthalein in 100 cc of alcohol.. (17) Glycerol-soda Solution.--Add 20 cc of a 50 per cent solution of sodium hydroxid to 180 cc pure concentrated glycerol. The soda must be as free from carbonate as possible. (2) Apparattis. (a) Saponification Flasks, of from 250 to 300 cc capacity, of hard, well-annealed glass, capable of resisting the tension of alcohol vapor at 100. (ft) A Pipette graduated to deliver 40 cc. (c) Distilling Apparatus. (J) Burette.--An accurately calibrated burette reading to tenths of a cubic centimeter. (3) Determination. (a) Weighing The Fat.--The butter or fat to be examined should be melted and kept in a dry, warm place at about 60 for two or three hours, until the water and curd have entirely deposited. The clear, supernatant fat is poured oif and filtered through a dry filter paper in a jacketed funnel containing boiling water. Should the filtered fat, in a fused state, not be perfectly clear, it must be filtered a second time. The saponification flasks are prepared by thoroughly washing with water, alcohol, and ether, wiping perfectly dry on the outside, and heating for one hour at the temperature of boiling water. The flasks should then be placed in a tray by the side of the balance and covered with a silk handkerchief until they are perfectly cool.
