His mother felt as if a personal injury had been done her, and could scarcely restrain a feeling of envy toward the poor woman who smiled so gladly from beneath her plain gingham sun-bonnet as her homely boy came blushing to her with his first prize. The next day was the beginning of the summer holidays. Miss Lucy Thornton had come over from Wilkes to be at the exhibition. She was rather a prim old maid. As the reader will see, maiden ladies are common in my pages, and they are common in the world, and have done their share in ruining nephews and nieces. Miss Lucy was the next child to Harry's father. She had loved him devotedly, and now transferred her love to the boy. She was living with her brother-in-law in Wilkes, had an independent property of her own, and spent a part of every year with her sister Mary, where she passed her time very largely in spoiling her hopeful nephew by indulging his every whim. She had promised Harry he should have a handsome pony if he won that prize. She had confidently looked for his winning it, and she felt the disappointment more keenly than one could have thought possiblcT. There are no trifles where children are concerned. The desire to see them shine and win prizes is a ruling one in most parental bosoms. Have I not seen a father deeply hurt by the injustice of not giving L little girl a Sunday-school prize worth a few dimes, and a mother grieved more than she could say because an electro-plated medal fell to the other girl? But of all persons deeply hurt when prizes fail, commend me to a maiden aunt who has an only nephew for whom all great things are expected. Th...
