Methought I heard a still small voice Cry to earth, Rejoice, rejoice, Over the winter cold and dark; Hope has drifted like the ark, And spring has brought the first green leaf-Forerunner of the gathered sheaf! And then methought I heard a sigh, It seemed the wind that glided by: The flowers are fed with sun and rain, But can they bring 'to life again The rose that bloomed and died last year, Or paint the leaf that's brown and sere? The flowers will never bloom again, For them the spring returns in vain I SONGS OF THE YEAR. II A lover sang the song of May, The trysting time of all the year, When all things love, and woo, and mate: And all the village paused to hear. II. THE SONG OF LOVE.
