About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1867 edition. Excerpt: ...A piece of damp lead-paper is placed in each end, A, A', of the tube, and purified gas, as supplied to the public, is passed through it. The lead-paper at A will be found clean if the gas be fairly purified by the old methods, and that at A' will be blackened by sulphuretted hydrogen, &c., formed by the hot lime from the sulphuretted compounds in the gas. Cold slaked lime, alkalis, &c., will remove the sulphur which leadpaper will detect, and the gas passes on for use freed from that sulphur. From the power of the heated lime to act upon all the sulphur compounds in gas, it is obvious that this test does not enable us to decide upon the nature of the sulphuretted compounds in the gas from which the sulphur has been rendered removable. This is the most delicate test for sulphur in gas with which we are acquainted. A gentleman, who supplements careful purification of the ordinary kind by passing his gas through an alkaline solution of oxide of lead, informs me that my apparatus always liberates sulphur from the gas thus carefully purified. TESTING GAS BY BLOWING ITS FLAME UPON THE sURFACE OF WATER. This has been suggested as a ready means of detecting sulphur in gas. Blow the flame of a gas blowpipe for a short time upon the surface of some water free from sulphates, boil the water with a little nitric acid, and add a soluble salt of baryta. If there be a cloudiness or a precipitate after the addition of the baryta salt, it proves the presence of sulphur. TESTING GAS FOE SULPHUR BY PASSING IT THROUGH AMMONIACAL ALCOHOL, AND ADDING ACETATE OF LEAD. Dr. C. Herzog communicated the following to Chem. Centralblatt, Nov. 1, 1861, p. 1: "Prepare a saturated solution of ammonia in absolute alcohol, and a perfectly saturated solution of sugar...
