About the Book

Air cargo is a key element of the global supply chain. It allows outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries and links production in both multinational and smaller enterprises. It has also been the most important driver of certain export industries in countries such as South Africa, Kenya and Chile. As a component of the air transport industry, air cargo makes the crucial difference between profit and loss on many long-haul routes.

This second edition of Moving Boxes by Air offers a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the business and practices of air cargo, with chapters dedicated to key issues such as current trends, market characteristics, regulation, airport terminal operations, pricing and revenues, and environmental impacts. The book illustrates the recent emphasis on mergers at the expense of alliances, which have not had the impact that they had on passenger operations. The section on security has been expanded to assess in more depth the threats to aircraft from terrorists, particularly in the lower cargo and passenger baggage compartments. Surcharges are examined and the book considers whether all airlines will follow the lead of some to do away with both fuel and security surcharges. The book concludes with a summary of the latest industry forecasts.

Fully updated throughout, this edition is the definitive guide to air cargo for professionals within both the aviation and freight industries.

Review :

'This book is essential reading for anyone interested in air cargo, this includes students as well as people working in air transport. It gives a well-rounded and comprehensive view of the sector, covering key issues that affect this challenging area. The new edition addresses more recent developments as well as highlights the changes in this sector.' — Robert Mayer, Course Director, Cranfield University, UK

'This is an excellent book about the essential but often overlooked area of air cargo. It’s a must for all students of air transportation' — James Pearson, Coventry University, UK

'Given the fast changing environment and complexities of the air cargo industry this second edition of "Moving Boxes by Air - The Economics of International Air Cargo" is a useful update and extension of the original version. A good textbook and excellent background reading for practitioners.' — Rico Merkert, Deputy Director, Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies, The University of Sydney Business School, Australia

'Air Cargo may be the ‘poor relation’ of the aviation family, but the authors’ comprehensive analysis demonstrates that whilst perhaps never destined to be family head, cargo’s complexity and contribution to the family is underrated. This book proves air cargo is so much more than just ‘moving boxes by air’' — Gordon McJannett, Lecturer in Aviation Management, Coventry University

'It is great to see that this book addresses the various complexities of air cargo transportation and gives insights into every aspect of it. It is therefore truly a must-study for those who want to make a career in purchasing, transportation and logistics. The laymen will discover some of the stuff that happens behind the scenes when they click ‘buy’ while purchasing their cell phone or whatever they are buying online from their favourite e-tailer’s site' — Ram C. Menen, retired aviation and air cargo executive, founding team member of Emirates and TIACA.

"Starting with 'Air cargo traffic and capacity' and ending with 'Air cargo forecasting,' Moving Boxes by Air gives a detailed insight into many of the aspects of what air cargo is about, delivered in such a way that both the new entrants and the 'old hands' in the business won't want to put it down once they've started to read...It is definitely a good reference publication and we feel is one which should gain the attention of air freight managers and their staff around the globe." - John Mc Donagh / Heiner Siegmund, Cargo Forwarder Global

Comments on 1st edition

'As a long-time student of the industry myself, especially concerned with the furtherance of education and training, I am appreciative of Dr. Morrell's well-deserved reputation for sound scholarship. Particularly commendable is the unusually comprehensive breadth of subjects he so ably tackles in this single volume as he examines the industry in light of continuing and significant challenges.'

Jim Edgar, Boeing Regional Cargo Marketing Director and Chair, Education & Research Committee of The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA)

'Air cargo deserves far greater recognition of its role in the profitability of airlines, and in the global distribution of goods and the spread of the benefits of globalization. A book such as Moving Boxes by Air is therefore a highly welcome addition to the published material covering this aspect of the industry, and provides a fresh analysis and insights. It includes a good overview of the market (customers, commodities and suppliers), of the state of the industry, and of the key issues faced. It is especially relevant to see a balanced chapter on air cargo and the environment, as this topic is still relatively unexplored.'

Oliver Evans, Chief Cargo Officer, Swiss International Air Lines Ltd

‘…the book offers interesting insights into current issues such as the respective advantages of cargo airliners (Boeing 777F versus Boeing 747-8F) or industry trends (potential differences in strategic objectives between Cargolux and Qatar Airways).’
