About the Book

Design and technology is a subject that interests and excites most young people. It requires them to work both practically and theoretically, to investigate and research, design, plan, make and evaluate. It encourages creativity, decision-making and problem-solving as pupils get to grips with real needs and real products. Design and technology covers work with electronics, food, materials such as wood, metal, plastics and textiles, and requires the development of graphical skills, practical skills and theoretical knowledge and understanding. Learning to Teach Design and Technology in the Secondary School, second edition, aims to help student-teachers develop their subject knowledge and professional knowledge and skills. Review :
Review 1 I envisage buying the new edition for all the trainee teachers on the Gloucestershire Teacher Training. It would without doubt be on the indicative reading list and every trainee would use it. Irrespective of the competition any book written or edited by Gwyneth would make it onto the indicative reading list. The D&T community is a close network and I have learnt that she her work is thoughtful, accurate and trusted. Her background in D&T is a further advantage as Gwyneth has actually taught the subject and always ensures there is a balance between the different specialisms in the subject. Looking at the chapter titles it is clear to me that she is drawing on the wealth of expertise from the top practitioners within each field of knowledge. Gwyneth Owen-Jackson it a trusted authority on Design and Technology. She is highly respected by colleagues as the author of influential educational books on this rapidly evolving subject. Design and Technology is constantly moving forwards and it is time that a replacement edition was available to accommodate the many changes that have taken place since 2000: the new KS3 curriculum and 14-19 curriculum and of course the every child matter agenda which is driving education thinking at every level. Very appropriate coverage that trainee teachers would be able to access easily. I am assuming that every child matters would be embedded in the main body of the text. I would also like to see some guidance on moving to Masters in the CPD section which is the way most ITE providers are going. Keith Kinder Subject Leader for D&T ITT GITEP and Advanced Skills Teacher Review 2 Having read the Rationale behind this book, I feel that there is a real need for the new edition to be published as it will address many of the recent moves in both education in schools and the requirements in teacher training in the UK. The UK market would be the most appropriate market to target as the book refers specifically to the English Education system and to Government requirements for teachers in the UK. To my knowledge there are approx 40 ITE providers and I am sure that this book would become essential reading for all of the trainee teachers and the University tutors involved in delivering the programmes. The book would also be of interest to teachers in schools who are involved in training teachers through school based routes, such as the GTP. With other Government initiatives coming through, such as the Student Associate Scheme, there may well be other groups of people who would be interested in reading this book, maybe as recommended support material. I would envisage the book to be classed as "Essential Reading" on any PGCE or Undergraduate D&T Teacher Training Programme. It is usual to recommend the main titles as those that the trainee should purchase but I would also expect to carry additional copies in the University Library for those who could not buy the book or those who needed to refer to the book and had left it behind. I would recommend enough copies in the Library to support half the cohort. Gwyneth Owen-Jackson is a recognised authority in the field of ITE Design and Technology. She has written many papers and presented at conference on many occasions. She is widely known and respected in the field of D&T and is an active member of the Design and Technology Association.
