John This day Marion Horn, in the parish of Clackmannan, ap Marion peared ljefore the Bishop and Synod with a young child in her Horn. arms--and, being interrogate by the Bishop who was the father of the foresaid child, she said Johnne Sands of Langside, and declared her never to give any other father to it. John Sands of Langside being cited, appeared before the Bishop and Synod, and being examined by the Bishop, and seriouslie exhorted to give ane free confession of that sin of advdterie committed by him with Marion Hom, as she most constantlie asserted; but the said John Sands stands as yet to ane stiffe denial, and declairs plainly that he would never acknowledge the foresaid child to be his--neither him ever to have had any carnal dealing with the foresaid person. The Bishop and Synod having considered the whole processe of John Sands and Marion Horn, led and deduced before the session of Culross, and both of them being confronted before the Bishop and Synod, and also the circumstances of Synod VI. time and place given by the said Marion being seriouslie 1e78. considered by the Bishop and Synod, does, by all appearances (notwithstanding the stiff deniall of the said John Sands), consider him to be guilty of the sin of adulterie with the said Marion; and therefore the Bishop and Synod referrs the said John Sands to the minister and session of Culross, and desire him to deal earnestlie with him daylie, and also to offer the oath to him, and give him a double thereof to consider thereupon; but desyred the minister not to be hastie in taking of his oath, although he should see the said John to be most willing therein: and therefore the Bishop exhorted the said John Sands to observe diligentlie the ordinances of t...
