He will attend the annual parades for rifle practice of the companies of his regiment, and shall be the instructor; and if not able to be personally present on occasion of rifle duty, he will so report to his commandiMg officer, who will detail a competent officer to act in his stead. The powers and authority of inspectors of rifle practice in the field will be duly respected by all, and enforced by the commanding officer on duty. On the thirtyfirst day of July in each year he will make a return of the classification of the practice of his regiment, in duplicate, and forward one copy to the adjutant general, with names of all marksmen and sharpshooters qualifying in the year, and their scores. ARMS AND AMMUNITION. In regular practice each enlisted man will shoot with the piece issued by the State and brought by him on the ground unless the same is condemned for actual defects by the inspector, in which case he may shoot with the nearest approved piece in the ranks, and the condemned one will be returned for repairs or exchange. Commandants of companies must not allow rifles to be taken from the armories or issue ammunition except for practice in charge of an officer or non-commissioned officer. If any member of a company be assigned to a regimental or state team, he may, with the permission of his captain, take and retain his rifle for private practice while he is a member of said team, but such retention carries no right to use the ammunition of the State, nor relieves the captain of responsibility if rifle is lost.
