About the Book

Geometry, measurement, and data aren’t just math topics—they’re fundamental skills for understanding the world around us Geometry, measurement, and data concepts play a major role in everyday life. Yet, when it comes to teaching math in the elementary grades, these concepts can be overshadowed by other content, like number concepts, computation, or fractions. Instead, what if these ideas about measurement, geometry, and data were connected to number and computation? What if they were featured content for bursts of engagement, reasoning, and discussion? The bite-sized routines in this guide are just that! The routines in this book are perfect for teachers looking for interesting and doable daily practice that engage students in geometry, measurement, and data to foster reasoning, critical thinking, and sense-making. Daily Routines to Jump-Start Geometry, Measurement, and Data, Grades K-5 provides routines that are practical, easy-to -implement, and meant for quick engagements to ignite thinking and reasoning skills while being adaptable to various content. Fortified with standards for math practices and processes, this book Provides a collection of 20 routines with extensions and modifications for measurement, data, and geometry Includes a detailed example for each routine on why it matters, the challenges it addresses, and how to facilitate it in the classroom Offers guidance for selecting and introducing routines as well as how to design your own routines Helps you integrate the geometry, measurement, and data concepts earlier in the school year and can complement any curriculum or textbook program Features bonus activities that infuse money and time! Extends learning through a companion website that includes each routine as a downloadable and an editable set of PowerPoint slides that provides templates for making your own examples By implementing these daily routines, you can not only enhance your student′s understanding and engagement in geometry, measurement, and data but also foster a deeper connection between math and the real world.

Review :
At last! With this new addition to the Daily Routines series, elementary teachers can rejoice. For a long time, geometry, measurement, and data have taken a back seat in terms of priority in the elementary math curriculum. This resource provides teachers with practical tasks, strategies, and guidance on how to integrate these math topics intentionally and purposefully, support students’ sense making, and allow students to build foundational understanding of this content. John SanGiovanni and Dennis McDonald have delivered another essential resource for math educators! Daily Routines to Jump-Start Geometry, Measurement, and Data revitalizes often-overlooked concepts with engaging, practical routines. Designed to spark thinking and build excitement, these strategies can be used anytime in math class to inspire meaningful learning and mathematical success. This book is a game-changer for ensuring students connect with geometry, measurement, and data in powerful ways! Seeking a quick read about what is important related to teaching K–5 geometry, measurement, and data—that includes engaging routines to support that learning all year? This book is for you! Part 1 lays out big ideas in geometry, measurement, and data across K–5, Part 2 equips us with 20 engaging routines to support those big ideas (with many variations!), and Part 3 challenges us to effectively implement those routines. An excellent resource! As a mathematics education consultant and coach for 24 years, I highly recommend this low-prep, high-impact resource. It ensures that geometry, measurement, and data are embedded with number concepts, giving math real context. These short, rich tasks make math meaningful and relatable, helping students connect ideas. With editable PowerPoint slides, it’s a time-saver for busy teachers. Take the leap—your students will grow! These authors understand the struggles of today’s teachers without placing guilt and shame. They share the truths that every math teacher encounters daily. The book’s ideas are shared in a step-by-step approach that can be incorporated into daily classroom instruction seamlessly and are not overwhelming, yet they provide an overwhelming amount of rigor in a short period. The routines allow for flexible thinking, reasoning, and engagement—behaviors that enhance the learning process, and stimulate active learning. This book is a must-have for any K–5 teacher! John SanGiovanni and Dennis McDonald have crafted 20 powerful measurement, data, and geometry routines—each packed with variations that can be implemented immediately. These often-overlooked content areas come to life with practical, engaging strategies that bring meaningful measurement, data, and geometry experiences into your classroom right away. Daily Routines to Jump-Start Geometry, Measurement, and Data serves as an excellent resource for teachers to incorporate practical routines that promote both student engagement and discussion, and are easy to implement. Geometry, measurement, and data are often topics that are disconnected from number sense and hurried through at year end. These routines provide high-quality practice and foster connections that will deepen student understanding. Do you feel as if ideas related to geometry, measurement, and data often get put on the back burner? SanGiovanni and McDonald provide guidance for using a steady diet of routines throughout the school year to engage students in thinking deeply about these concepts. They are easy to implement, and your students will absolutely love them!!! Daily Routines to Jump-Start Geometry, Measurement, and Data is perfect for any elementary math classroom, offering engaging and easy-to-implement number routines that reinforce key concepts. The embedded professional learning makes it a valuable resource for all educators! This user-friendly resource is a must-have for any educator looking to make math both meaningful and fun. It highlights how K–5 math concepts can be taught effectively through geometry, measurement, and data throughout the year rather than left to the final units of study. This resource not only strengthens content knowledge but also sparks students’ mathematical reasoning. This book provides clear strategies for implementing engaging routines and linking them to key math concepts. These routines are designed to complement teachers’ efforts and alleviate the stress of covering all concepts before state assessments. By focusing on building students’ math agency, particularly with supporting standards, the book highlights how proficiency can be achieved through frequent experiences with geometry, measurement, and data.
