About the Book

Creating Inclusive Classrooms for Muslim Students: A Practical Guide for Teachers is the first comprehensive resource specifically designed to help K-12 educators understand and address the unique educational experiences of Muslim students. Drawing on Muslim Critical Theory (MusCrit), this book translates complex theoretical concepts into immediately actionable classroom strategies. The book explores six core tenets through real classroom case studies spanning elementary, middle, and high school contexts: recognizing systemic oppression, addressing the impact of visible Muslim identity, acknowledging gender intersections, amplifying authentic Muslim voices, challenging white cultural norms, and fostering essential allyship. Each chapter provides reflective practice exercises, concrete implementation strategies, and comprehensive resource lists. Readers will gain specific tools to recognize anti-Muslim bias in curriculum materials, create culturally responsive classroom practices, support students with visible religious identities, and advocate for systemic change. The book transforms good intentions into effective practice, ensuring Muslim students can thrive authentically in your educational spaces.

Table of Contents:
1. Understanding Muslim Experiences in Education 2. Understanding Systemic Patterns in Educational Settings 3. Navigating Visible Religious Identity at School 4. Understanding Gender and Faith in Student Experiences 5. Amplifying Counter-Narratives 6. Examining Cultural Norms in Educational Environments 7. The Essential Role of Allies 8. Conclusion: The Work That Remains

Review :
"This is a such a special and important book for educators seeking to understand the intersections of Muslim identities and the educational needs of our Muslim youth. In a time of ignorance, fear and misconceptions of Islam, students often struggle with how to navigate schools and classrooms. Dr. Ali helps educators understand and love our Muslim students while providing practical ways for disrupting injustices in teaching and learning, moving toward authentic inclusion for all students. Building upon her incredible work within MusCrit, this book moves theory into meaningful action—a book the field of teaching and teacher education has been waiting for!" Gholnecsar (Gholdy) Muhammad, Ph.D., University of Illinois Chicago, John Corbally Endowed Professor of Literacy, Language, and Culture, Department of Curriculum and Instruction “In a moment where Islamaphobia has been normalized in U.S. schools, Dr. Noor Ali pushes us to challenge assumption and stereotype. Her efforts stand as a critical, practical and unapologetic commitment to keep Muslim students safe while reminding them that they are seen and cared for.” David Stovall, Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago “In Creating Inclusive Classrooms for Muslim Students, Noor Ali masterfully weaves essential insights into the school experiences of Muslim students together with action recommendations deeply informed by those insights. The result is a transformative vision for equity, for something more than little tweaks and equity optics. If you’re ready for that transformative vision, do yourself a favor and read this book; if you’re not ready for it, do yourself an even bigger favor and read this book.” Paul Gorski, Co-author with Seema Pothini of Case Studies on Diversity and Social Justice Education “As we fiercely engage as changemakers, in anti-oppression work, Dr. Ali’s comprehensive guide is a must-have tool to ensure our focus is inclusive of Muslim students and all students, waiting to be acknowledged. Courageous educators are pivotal in dismantling oppressive systems and I encourage everyone to use this book, as you guide your work, everyday.” Michelle Chalmers, MSW, Racial Justice Educator, White People Challenging Racism? Moving from Talk to Action "Dr. Ali has created a brilliantly comprehensive, engaging, and accessible approach for all stakeholders in education to further their cultural competency, which is foundational for effective teaching. Through the lens of MusCrit, she lays out essential frameworks, inspires both personal and professional critical reflection through poignant case studies, prompts consideration through multiple perspectives, and details concrete action-steps we must take to educate all students. As a classroom teacher responsible for designing and implementing PD, I urge all those involved in teaching and learning to use this superbly crafted text as the basis for their continued professional development work." Alison McCormick, High School Classroom Teacher and Life-Long Learner "Noor Ali's book ensures that no child is left out of the classroom. Our Muslim students need to be seen, heard, recognized, and included in the democratic process of our schools--now more than ever! This book helps teachers to do that." Kelly Lawlor, 5-12 English Teacher and Co-founder of Rediscover Mapledale
