About the Book

The women you know, the stories you don’t … Two thousand years ago, a Roman poet picked up his pen and dared to wonder what a heroine might sound like. Now, the women of Greco-Roman myth are speaking once more. And they have stories to tell … A murderous Medea stalks the streets of Belle-Epoque Paris, knife in hand, while a 17th-century Penelope faces accusations of witchcraft. Phaedra languishes, a bored and lonely Hollywood housewife until her husband brings home his dashing young son. Canace battles the dangers of the American Frontier, Sappho rebels against the rigid confines of academia and her relationship, while Dido must decide between desire and duty … in a 12th-century nunnery. And Helen? Helen just longs to be given a choice. It’s not going to be easy – it will be grisly at times – but in their determination to break free from the shadows of myth, to harvest a new ending for themselves, there’s bound to be darkness, bound to be a little collateral damage ... Reimagined, scattered throughout history, united by the timeless struggle of existing as women in what has always been a man’s world, these heroines, encouraged and enlivened by the pen of another woman, speak loud and clear to us today.

Review :
'Strap on some soft soled gladiator sandals and step into an expertly written journey of feminist reimagining of the most visceral Greek myths.' 'Original and intriguing. A real page turner.' 'Powerful and darkly beautiful stories.' 'I love it! In Dark Harvest, Ovid’s aggrieved heroines escape the confines of mythology and reappear in unexpected places and timelines, their voices sharp and contemporary. Hazel Atkinson has repurposed Ovid’s Heroides, allowing the most spirited, the most steely Classical heroines to retell their stories of love, betrayal, revenge for a new readership. It’s rather brilliant.'
