About the Book

This innovative textbook presents the principles of engineering dynamics through the lens of classical mechanics of physics, while purposefully expanding its pedagogical scope to include culturally grounded examples relevant to the multicultural student body of Hawai'i culture and beyond. Drawing from original physics literature and emphasizing clarity in conceptual understanding, the book is designed to meet the academic rigor expected in engineering programs, while also addressing a critical and often overlooked question: Can a Western-engineered curriculum effectively teach students from diverse cultural and historical backgrounds? To answer this, the author integrates carefully selected examples from Native Hawaiian culture into each chapter—rigorously recontextualized within the scientific framework of engineering dynamics. These examples serve as a bridge between abstract physics principles and culturally meaningful experiences, offering students a more holistic and inclusive approach to learning. This book is a pioneering step toward a more culturally responsive engineering education, ideal for undergraduate students, instructors, and curriculum developers seeking to foster greater relevance, inclusivity, and engagement in STEM classrooms.

About the Author :
Dr Albert S. Kim is currently a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, USA. His academic background is theoretical physics, having earned his BS (1991) and MS (1994) degrees in South Korea. Professor Kim received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Early CAREER Award in 2005, which supports early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education. He has also been honored with the Excellence Medals in Research (2006) and Teaching (2017) from the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaiʻi system, which are the two most prestigious awards for faculty at the university. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles that cover rigorous theories and innovative simulations in various areas of environmental and chemical engineering, with a focus on computational fluid and particle dynamics, membrane separations, and renewable desalination. Additionally, he has edited three books and authored six chapters related to engineering sciences and applied mathematics. As a principal investigator, Professor Kim has led a cross-disciplinary NSF project that integrates cultural psychology, Hawaiian studies, and engineering disciplines to design a pioneering paradigm for engineering education tailored to students from Hawaiʻi culture.
